Playboi Carti‘s new album I Am Music did not drop at its scheduled release time of midnight on Friday (March 14), but the Atlanta rapper has offered up an explanation for its continued delay.

In a private message sent to Kai Cenat that the streamer read aloud on his Twitch channel in the early hours of Friday, Carti said: “If it wasn’t for the samples and clearances it would [have] been out at 12 east but we good err thing cleared it should be out in any sec.”

The long-awaited album has still yet to be released on streaming services as of this writing, but Carti has further fueled excitement by sharing the official tracklist via his record label Opium’s Instagram page.

The project clocks in at a lengthy 30 songs and boasts appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Future, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, Skepta and Ty Dolla $ign.

Some of these names make multiple cameos: Travis appears on three songs (“Crush,” “Philly” and “Wake Up F1lthy”) while Future appears on two (“Charge Dem Hoes a Fee” and “Trim”), as does Uzi (“Jumpin” and “Twin Trim”).

The latter’s contributions are especially notable considering Carti and Uzi’s relationship soured around 2019, resulting in them allegedly having a physical altercation.

The pair later reunited on stage at Rolling Loud New York in 2021. “Jumpin” and “Twin Trim” mark their first collaborations since 2017.

Meanwhile, there is speculation that Kendrick’s guest verse on “Good Credit” may include shots at his archrival Drake.

“Buck up, y’all. That n-gga talking shit again,” said Akademiks, who has been in contact with Carti in the run up to his album release, on his Rumble channel earlier this week.

I Am Music was previously rumored to arrive before the end of 2024, especially after Playboi Carti premiered a slew of new songs during his headline set at Rolling Loud Miami in December.

In an interview with Billboard earlier that year, Grammy-winning producer Cardo shed light on the album and suggested that it will pioneer a whole new subgenre of rap.

“Carti’s style is in constant evolution, and he and Cardo already have a name for the sound they’ve been workshopping for the project: ‘burnt music,’” the article read.

“We’ll be in the studio, like, ‘This music is burnt,’” explained Cardo, who produced several of Carti’s warm-up tracks including “H00DBYAIR,” “EVILJ0RDAN” and the Travis Scott-assisted “BACKR00MS.”

The Minnesota-bred beatmaker also cited Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul and Juicy J, DJ Toomp, The Legendary Traxster and even John Carpenter — the director and composer behind classic horror movies like HalloweenThe Thing and Escape From New York — as influences for I Am Music.
