If Chingy’s hunch is correct, Kanye West did beat him out for Best New Artist at the 2005 BET Awards while Pharrell, Anthony Hamilton and Ruben Studdard were also nominated in the category.
Donda West tragically passed away in 2007 from coronary artery disease and complications related to cosmetic surgery. While Chingy’s mother, Vernita “Jean” Crawford, died from natural causes at the age of 59 in 2017.
“The loss of our mother was unforeseen and heartbreaking,” he wrote in a letter at the time. “She was the foundation to who my siblings and I are and she is loved by many. We’re asking for privacy in this time of bereavement and hope you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers, as we learn to cope with this devastating absence from our family structure.”
The St. Louis native opened up about the loss of his mom in a vulnerable 2020 interview with PEOPLE. He was happy to deliver on his promise of buying her a home once his rap career took off.

“A lot of things aren’t great anymore since losing my mom. It’s a dullness that’s in me,” he candidly stated. “I can still can go on, but part of me is gone. Something like that can make you want to give up and quit because it’s a serious matter losing your mom. You come out of your mother, so you got this vibrational energy that’s just with your mother.”
