HipHopDX Premiere: Lady Wray has come through with a video for the infectious single, “Smiling,” which automatically triggers a giant smile the moment the song begins. The positivity that radiates throughout the track is impossible to ignore as the Virginia-born singer belts her way though the uplifting lyrics. The hook repeats, “Just keep on smiling,” providing an odd type of comfort that perhaps everything is going to work out. Taken from her new album, Queen Alone, it’s a nice introduction to the sultry soul of the Atlanta-based artist.
“‘Smiling’ is one of those songs that lets you know things will be ok no matter the situation or struggle,” Lady Wray tells DX. “It’s the lyrics that keep me balanced when things seem impossible. I had all my family and friends come over for a BBQ in Atlanta where I live to shoot the ‘Smiling’ video at my Aunt Moe’s house.
“There was plenty of food,” she adds. “What a great time we all had. Also, my grandparents were there while filming and they enjoyed seeing me do what I do. My grandfather said if he was still young he would have wanted to sing a song like that. I kinda just wanted the concept for ‘Smiling’ video to be about love and coming together with the people you enjoy, and for me, that’s my family and friends.”
