During their Los Angeles stop at The Novo by Microsoft Theater Thursday (August 17), DJ Quik spoke with DX about his relationship with Scarface, the initial concept of the tour and a collaborative EP with the Facemob leader.
“I think an EP first because my ADD won’t let me do an album no more,” Quik told #DXLive host Jake Rohn. “Scarface and I, we working on an EP actually. We’re actually recording every show that we do into Protools all stemmed out. We’re going to listen back to it after the tour is done and in the interim, we’re writing lyrics and music on the bus. It just makes sense to make an EP not just to sell and have a record out but to make this whole experience and give it to people to feel a vibe.”
Currently, Quik and Face are on a 12-date tour, with a possibility of additional stops. The joint run between the two comes from a friendship that dates back to the early moments in their careers.

“The first time me and Scarface met was in 1991,” explained Quik. “We were on tour with MC Hammer and I think Chubb Rock was out there with us, Kris Kross and it was the Geto Boys and us. It was Ice Cube’s Amerikkka’s Most Wanted tour. I think the Geto Boys were promoting We Can’t Be Stopped and I was promoting Quik Is The Name. We met and he was just a cool, down to earth and a solid dude. I had already loved his music for years. When he’d come out here to visit, I’d pick him up myself and drive him around. Don’t call no taxi and we just built from there.”
When DX spoke with Face himself, he discussed everything from his relationship with Quik to officially retiring next year after spending 30 years in the game.
“In my opinion, Quik is the best fuckin’ mixer, producer and engineer,” said Scarface before speaking about his last solo album with frequent collaborator N.O. Joe. “Scarface might die, but Brad Jordan will be here forever.”

Back in 2012, Kurupt hinted at a sequel to his collaborative BlaQKout project with Quik, and he spoke to DX about the status of the follow-up.
“We working on the new DJ Quik and Kurupt album,” said Kurupt. “The title is not for the public. Not yet, but you gon’ love it baby. Uncle Quik said we gone hit ’em with nothing but gangsta shit.”
