Chance The Rapper has responded to a sudden realization that “Laffy Taffy” hitmakers D4L have been missing in action ahead of Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary.

On Saturday (July 29) the Chi-town native took to Twitter where he aired out his grievances about the absence of the group — comprising Atlanta-based rappers Fabo, Mook-B, Stoney, and the late Shawty Lo — from a series of events celebrating the landmark moment.

“Just realizing I haven’t seen D4L at a single Hip Hop 50 event yet. Y’all trippin,” he tweeted, acknowledging that while he’s late to the party, so is everyone else who neglected to recognize the snap rap quartet.

A number of fans agreed with Chance’s statement. “Naw fr,” wrote one Twitter user. “The beats on that album was NUTS.” commented another.

While another Twitter user called Chance’s bluff, alleging D4L has in fact held it down at events in the ATL. “They were at a few…Just weren’t paying attention. Cuz the A definitely been having dem at their events [laughing emoji],” the comment read.

On the music front, the “Cocoa Butter Kisses” rhymer is hard at work putting the final touches on his upcoming new album, Star Line Gallery — and he’s been spreading the word that it may be his best work yet.

“It’s merched I got the best next album outta all the n-ggas that have a next album [three weeping emojis],” wrote Chance via Twitter last weekend, hyping up the release.

“Merched” is Chicago slang for “proven,” so he appears to have no doubts as to who will put out the next best record. This is a particularly bold claim considering his last release was widely panned by fans and the media.

In early June, the 30-year-old called into Audacy Check In to provide an update on the follow-up to 2019’s The Big Day.

“It’s one of my proudest projects in terms of writing and artistic vision,” he said. “There’s an immense amount of work to be done with it. But it’s cool ’cause I feel like with the love and intentionality that goes into making each physical art piece gives me an opportunity to show people in these museum spaces what I’m working on as I go, the highs and the lows, kind of like a preview to the project…”

The album title shares its name with Chance and Vic Mensa’s festival in Ghana. The Black Star Line Festival took place in Accra’s Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, in early January 2023.
