Today marks the day that many civil rights activists, concerned Americans and the Hip Hop community will rally down in Jena Louisiana to protest the possible sentencing of Mychal Bell...

HipHopDX wants to know your thoughts on the developments and some of your quotes will be used in a feature story documenting this unfortunate turn of events.

Read below for a brief synopsis...

Six black students at Jena High School in Central Louisiana were arrested last December after a school fight in which a white student was beaten and suffered a concussion and multiple bruises. The six black students were charged with attempted murder and conspiracy. They face up to 100 years in prison without parole. The fight took place amid mounting racial tension after a black student sat under a tree in the schoolyard where only white students sat. The next day three nooses were hanging from the tree. [includes rush transcript] Jena is a small town nestled deep in the heart of Central Louisiana. Until recently, you may well have never heard of it. But this rural town of less than 4,000 people has become a focal point in the debate around issues of race and justice in this country.

Last December, six black students at Jena High School were arrested after a school fight in which a white student was beaten and suffered a concussion and multiple bruises. The six black students were charged with attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy. They face up to 100 years in prison without parole. The Jena Six, as they have come to be known, range in age from 15 to 17 years old.

Just over a week ago, an all-white jury took less than two days to convict 17 year-old Mychal Bell, the first of the Jena Six to go on trial. He was convicted of aggravated battery and conspiracy charges and now faces up to 22 years in prison.

Black residents say that race has always been an issue in Jena, which is 85 percent white, and that the charges against the Jena Six are no exception.

The origins of the story can be traced back to early September when a black high school student requested permission to sit under a tree in the schoolyard where usually only white students sat. The next day three nooses were found hanging from the tree.

This is a blatant example of how racism still runs rampant in our country but is conveniently overlooked by the masses.

Even today, as I walk around campus sporting my "Free the Jena 6" shirt...I see nobody acknowledging what happened. Everybody seems oblivious.

Not only does this event represent a racial injustice, but it is also a perfect example of the corruption within the American justice system. Mychal Bell's court appointed defense attorney wasn't even calling any witnesses to his defense. There were personal ties between the jury and the DA and other obvious kinks in the system.

The overturning of the original charges does NOT mark a victory yet. The case can be appealed to a new court, Bell and the others can still be charged as minors, or lesser charges can be pursued.

The white students who hung the nooses should have been charged in the criminal justice system with a HATE CRIME. The crime was something that should not have only been dealt with by school officials. At UMD, where a noose was recently hung from a tree on campus, they are treating it as a criminal case, pursued by law enforcement officers. Why the white students were never penalized by law is beyond me.

We may feel that we live in a state of freedom, but it's all an illusion. Many of the injustices that happened while our country was being founded and in it's early stages still continue today - to the knowledge of law officials and politicians that just turn the other way and let it happen. There is an unspoken racial hierarchy as well - ask any arab/desi how their life changed post 9/11. Yet, nobody will admit to being racists.

The KKK still passes out flyers asking for money and support!

More attention needs to be brought to injustices throughout our country and the world. The 4th branch media (word to Immortal technique) is manipulating the information so that the government can keep bragging about the "freedom" that we have.

I could go on about this issue for days. But that's it for now because my class is about to end and I gotta go.

the proceeds from my shirt went to finance proper legal defense for the 6, dezz, just so you know.

I don't do that shit much though, believe me.

I also wanna add to my above tirade that I don't feel that the six are INNOCENT. They DID kick somebody's ass...it's just attempted murder is an insane charge and they were victims of a hate crime that shouldn't be happening in today's society. And then they got screwed by the legal system.

I understand what you're saying and intially I said the same thing, but if they or anybody of interest steps up and pays those legal fees what kind of flood gate do they open? It's shaky ground if you do something like that b/c everybody in America will be at your door with their hands out when they are faced with the same situation.

Can it be done? I think so but somebody would have to send untraceable funds for their peace of mind.

First of all, I would to address the lack of comments on this messageboard. This is pretty sad that people who frequent this site would lack the courage to post to something that affects their culture and more importantly their people. People have a lack of empathy for people when their face with injustice, but if the shoes were on the opposite foot they would be the one calling for help. Back to the topic at hand the Jena Six boys I feel bad for them, but I expect that from America when it's true colors are revealed. Let's take time to think about this America everyone says, "America has Morales", but is this statement true? When did America ever have morales it is the same country who got rich off the black slavery system in place to disregard the well being of black person and get rich at the same time. Let's the truth speak for itself America the country, the nation has ALWAYS BEEN RACIST AND IT'S IMBEDED DEEP IN THE LAWS AND SOCIETY. Perfect example of how America is racist during the black slavery era the blacks were CONSIDER TWO-FIFTHS HUMANS. Now how the fuck is someone TWO-FIFTHS HUMAN IS THAT EVEN FUCKING POSSIBLE! I thought all humans are made equal, but not if your born in America. I strong opinpions about this topic I leave at this America NEVER HAD MORALES, BUT REMORSE FOR ALL THE HEINOUS FOR ALL THE HUMAN DEHUMANIZING CRIMES THAT IT HAS COMMITTED AND CONTINUE TO COMMIT PLUS AMERICA BEGS FOR EVERYONE SYMPATHY BECAUSE AMERICA HAS BEING DOING WRONG, BUT WON'T CHANGE A SINGLE LAW TO BRING EQUAL JUSTICE.

Co sign...I heard somewhere that in the constitution it says a black man is not as important as a white man.It may not be worded like that, but can anyone confirm this?

for real, im far from the most socially aware person out there, but i feel pretty confident in saying that racism and social injustice to such horrendous levels such as this will NOT happen in my country.

but to get back to the heart of the matter.

as a relative outsider looking in...what in the world can be done?

is the South not changing [aka evolving/progressing/growing] at all?

the rest of the US [from my knowledge] has in fact come a long way in the past hundred years or so from generation to generation...i wouldnt imagine something like this could happen in Cali or Massachusetts... [maybe im way off in this]

I remember playing XBox online with someone from...iono...dont remember it was along time ago....but he did say one thing

"if you're not white and protestant, you odnt live here"
