Checking out the visuals for One Dae’s latest video “Bang This,” and you’ll notice there’s a distorted reality happening. Director Steven Tapia places the artist in the heart of animated visuals that burst at you like watching a Pixar film in Imax. The most impressive aspect is the combination of real life and digital life that arrives from the video of One Dae’s lead single off his LP Daes & Times, which dropped back in December. “I chose ‘Bang This’ because it was the most commercially viable track on the album due to the production and lyrical content,” One Dae says of choosing “Bang This” as his first single. “The drastic increase of ‘rappers’ worldwide is what really inspired the song.” As for the concept of the video? We’ll let director Steven Tapia tell you about that.
HipHopDX: Did you and OneDae work on the treatment for “Bang This” together?
Steven Tapia: Yes. OneDae contacted me with an idea to bring everything that he’s rapping about to life. He emailed me a list of the lyrics he wanted brought to life. He wanted the animations and transitions to be clever. He was inspired by the music video I created for Hip Hop legends Masta Ace & Ed O.G. called “Little Young.”

DX: What inspired you to do an animated video?
Steven Tapia: OneDae wanted to set himself apart from the rest of the rappers that are currently out now. He contacted me for something that was left field and different. We decided that motion design would be the best approach for this project. Shooting it on green screen would allow us to create anything our minds can conceive.
DX: When did you get into this style of directing?

Steven Tapia: I’ve been directing these types of music videos since 2008. My first animated video was for a Staten Island based artist & friend named AC for a song called “New Soul.” The video went viral and was featured on wired.com. Since then I’ve worked with 50 Cent, Talib Kweli, Jennifer Lopez, Red Cafe & Victor Manuelle. I’ve always loved animating my designs. I also love Hip Hop music. It was a natural transition from static design to animation.
