Miss Rap Supreme Castaways: D.A.B.

April 24th, 2008 | Author: Aliya Ewing

Ego Trip’s Miss Rap Supreme heats up as scandal emerges within the first few minutes. Last Week, when Lionezz was given the boot despite a sub-par 16 bar freestyle spit by Khia, the internet starting buzzing about Khia using verses from tracks off of her old albums as “freestyles” throughout the entire show. Show host MC Serch addresses Khia’s blatant cheating and consequently disqualifies her (for Khia’s views on her disqualification click here). Due to Khia’s disqualification, Lionezz is now back in the house which a chance for redemption!

But the DQ drama didn’t mean the other girls were safe from the chopping block this week. Although soft-spoken D.A.B. [an acronym for Down Azz Bitch] stepped it up for the elimination team challenge, she was unable to hold her own during the elimination freestyle and was told to “Step Off!”

This week, DX sits down with the Dighton, MA femcee to rap about her seedy past, overcoming adversity, and shaking off the haters.

HipHopDX: Massachusetts is a small state, and I’m from Boston, born and raised…but I have no damn clue where Dighton is [laughs]. Where exactly is that?
D.A.B
: [laughs] It’ s like 30 minutes south of Boston. It’s actually close to Providence, RI.

DX: For both elimination challenges on the past two shows, you were picked last by team leaders. How did that make you feel?
D
: It sucks. I’m normally a strong person and I don’t usually let stuff get to me but when you’re in an environment 24 hours a day for two and a half weeks straight and you feel like no one supports you; you let it get to you, you know? I wish I could take that back because I pretty much beat myself.

DX: You’re very open about your past battles with drug addiction, how did you end up falling down that spiral?
D
: Well, like I said on the show I was molested and beat up by my family. I started to get into drinking. At 13 I was drinking all of the time. Then I started with the percs and vics and escalated to oxys. Then before I knew it, heroin was cheaper [for me]. It’s not something I ever imagined happening to me, but you know, it happened.

DX: How long have you been sober now?
D
: Since 1/09/06

DX: Congratulations! How did you finally come to the decision to quit using?
D
: I had tried detox a couple times but I was mostly doing it for my family. I would go for a week [then leave]. Finally my mom had me sectioned into a detox facility for 30 days and I started going to meetings and doing what other people told me. I actually started wanting to live, and let go of my past and stuff.

DX: Even though you’ve been clean for years, you still were the target of ridicule from Nicky2States and Khia who label you ‘Crackhead’. How do you deal with the negativity of people throwing your past in your face?
D
: I’ve always had to fight through negative comments. I actually still talk to Nicky2states now and we cool. But I just don’t let it bother me. I know where I’m from and I know there’s millions of other people that struggle with it or know someone that’s struggling with it so I just hope that I can touch just one person.

DX: Before you were eliminated, the judges called you too “soft” and “humble”. Were you holding back on us out of nervousness? Or is that really just your personality?
D
: I’m normally loud and crazy and in your face but it was kinda weird because I was just rapping in front of two people standing only five feet away from me. And I know now I shoulda just spit how I always do it, even if it’s just for someone at my house. But by that time my confidence was just really low. I was trying my best to keep fighting and I just wish that I coulda got through that elimination to show what I can do.

DX: Who do you think should win the show now that you’re gone?
D
: I think everyone’s got a unique style. Twist is crazy wit her flow…Cheeba, Cherry, Reece, all of them come wit it.

DX: So what’s next for you? Should we be on the lookout for any new D.A.B projects?
D
: Oh yeah, this is just the beginning for me. It was good to get my name out there. I’m making my CD and going to all of the labels, and they actually know of me now, so they’re lettin’ me in. I don’t have to worry about too much. I’m good from now on in.
