"Who you think brought you the Oldies, Eazy-Es, Ice Cubes, and The D.O.C.s, the Snoop D-O-double-Gs, and the group that said Motherfuck the police?"
Two days after Dr. Dre’s 49th birthday, have we forgotten about Dre? With the currently re-emerging state of West-coast Hip Hop and Dre-supported artists such as Kendrick Lamar to show for it, the answer is probably a resounding “no.” Released as the second single to Dr. Dre’s acclaimed 1999 album The Chronic 2001, “Forgot About D.R.E.” featuring Eminem’s unnerving Slim Shady alter-ego made known Dre’s feelings about any Death Row shots being thrown at the time. Winning an MTV VMA in 2000 and a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2001 only cemented the song’s legacy.
Most rap fans may have stopped holding out much hope for a Detox release, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t still watching Dre’s every move. So before he inks his next game-changing deal, crack open a cold one and give this classic record a spin in honor of the Doctor’s 49th.
