Los Angeles Funk outfit The Breakestra is gearing up for their next official release, Dusk Till Dawn. The September 29th album comes by way of Strut Records, the band’s first run with the label that’s also home to Grandmaster Flash [click to read].
Dusk Till Dawn is reportedly Breakestra‘s return to the studio after a four-year hiatus of live playing. The album’s title and theme is dedicated to Los Angeles Hip Hop personality, deejay and emcee DJ Dusk. Dusk, who passed away due to an automobile accident in 2006, worked closely with Breakestra frontman Miles Tackett throughout the band’s inception, at L.A.’s Rootdown venue.
“There will only ever be one DJ Dusk and his rhyme on ‘Posed To Be’ shows his unique flavor and finesse beautifully,” Tackett told HipHopDX. “He taught me about well-rounded Soul travelling on the turntables by example for his many years of time with the Rootdown Soundsystem, which has inspired me tåo look into other sounds I might not have dug up previously. Dusk‘s overall ‘original B-boy of the world’ spirit inspires me to always look back to the Funk foundations, and yet keep it moving into tomorrow and to hopefully help edutain new generations of kids hungry for those Funk sounds they don’t even know they’re missing.”

As usual, Dusk Till Dawn is led by Tackett and Mixmaster Wolf, who split the vocal duties on this album. The group released Hit The Floor on Ubiquity in 2005, after two widely collected “live mixtapes,” the second being released on Stones Throw near the top of the decade.
The musicians of the band have been rotating throughout the last decade, with members coming from and going to bands that include backing for DJ Z-Trip, Macy Gray and The Lions.
