Shyne’s Sentencing Delayed Until June

April 17th, 2001 | Author:

Brooklyn, NY-based rapper Shyne (born Jamal Barrow) was scheduled to be sentenced this week on assault, reckless endangerment and gun possession charges, however a judge ruled during a brief court session earlier today that the MC will now be sentenced on June 1st.

The sentencing was postponed at the request of Shyne’s lawyers, who wanted more time to file paperwork related to the sentencing as well as a post-trial motion for dismissal of some of the charges. The rapper's lawyers are also preparing for an appeal.

Shyne, who was brought in to the courtroom from Rikers Island in handcuffs, released a handwritten statement today in which he apologized to the injured victims of the December 27th, 1999 Club New York shooting, but he was careful not to accept responsibility for the shootout. Shyne was convicted last month for his role in the shooting, while his co-defendants, Bad Boy Entertainment CEO Sean "Puffy" Combs (who has promised to pay for Shyne's appeal) and bodyguard Anthony "Wolf" Jones, were acquitted of all charges.
