Pakistani Television Broadcasts Rap Tribute to Late Prime Minister, Bhutto
But while some may have given up hope, others have used Hip Hop to convey cathartic expressions of optimism. This past month, Bakhtwar, the 18-year-old daughter of the former Pakistani prime minister, has managed to translate feelings of lost hope and anguish into a rap song. In December of 2007, her mother, 54 year-old Benazir Bhutto and Pakistans first female prime minister, was murdered in a suicide gun and bomb attack. After the shocking assassination, thousands of her supporters came together in mourning.
Apart from being broadcast on Pakistani television, the song and video, titled, I Would Take the Pain Away, has been circulating YouTube, earning positive feedback.
It's a tribute of a grieving daughter to her iconic and loving mother, former aid to Bhutto, Shehrbano Sherry Rehman explained.
The success of the song not only goes to illustrate Hip Hops influence around the world, but also its ability to act as a facilitator of hope and unity.
