Remy Ma Appeals Eight Year Assault Sentence
After a lengthy courtroom battle, stemming from a shooting over a year ago, Remy Mas legal team has found new information that could overturn her March conviction for shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph.
Court documents obtained by TMZ.com state Remys legal team believe the trial regarding the incident which resulted in Barnes-Joseph being shot in the stomach, was handled incorrectly. Remy Ma (born Reminisce Smith) was subsequently sentenced to eight years for charges of assault, weapons possession and attempted coercion [click to read].
Remy's lawyers claim that the jury, over their objection, was manipulated, and ifBarnes-Joseph "was truthful and accurate" then her testimony "under the law satisfies the proof beyond a reasonable doubt." Remys legal team also alleges their client was denied a fair trial on the grounds that they werent allowed to argue that Barnes-Joseph was shot during a struggle for a gun.
The appeal goes on to explain that the numerous misjudgments of the court resulted in a directed verdict, which they say should be examined as more than just accidental error.
Remys lawyers also argue that including unrelated evidence, such as other incidents at the Players Club in New York City and tying her to gang members, likely colored the jurys consideration of the remaining counts.
Remy is currently serving her sentence at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in Westchester County, New York.
