Bun B to Push Voter Participation in Houston

Recently, Houston rappers Bun B [click to read], Chamillionaire [click to read], Paul Wall [click to read], Cory Mo, and Trae released a politically charged record endorsing presidential candidate Barack Obama. The song, fittingly titled Obama 08 [click to listen], is only a small portion of the effort made by the H-Town Allstars, as they are called, to garner voter participation in Houston.

These are new days in Texas, Bun B said on Chuck D's radio show, On the Real. We as Texans are tired of being stigmatized as Bush country, because nothing could be further from the truth. We're not Bush people, we're Bush victims in Texas. So we're taking our opportunity to do what we can right now. We're trying to get Rick Noriega in the Senate and just really take this thing one step at a time.

Bun B and the rest of the H-Town Allstars have been helping to politicize Houston by making sure residents are aware of the issues, and that they are registered to vote. In addition to their efforts to turn Texas, a traditionally Republican state, into a blue one, they are also hoping to get Houston voters engaged in local and state elections.

We really need to get people involved with local elections, state elections, and federal elections as well,
Bun B continued. A lot of these different propositions that come across the table affect a lot of these peoples' lives, and more importantly, their childrenI'll be personally going around with water and pizza just to make sure that people don't get discouraged in these long lines.

With elections happening on Tuesday, Bun B and the H-Town Allstars are working to encourage more Houston voters to the voting polls.

I didn't want Houston, or the South to be left out of its moment right now. I wanted people to know that we did stand up. We're doing a lot of things locally, but this is our message to the world.

Election day is Tuesday, November 4. Go to vote411.org to find voting locations and voting hours for your state.
