Vh1 Airs Documentary On N.W.A.
The documentary pays tribute to one of Hip Hop's most controversial groups and hails them the pioneers of gangsta rap
This Friday, Vh1 is scheduled to air N.W.A.: The World's Most Dangerous Group, a documentary highlighting the reign of one of the most legendary groups in Hip Hop history.
The Compton, California based group released its first album, N.W.A. and the Posse, in 1987, but it was not until their sophomore effort, infamously titled Straight Outta Compton, did they go on to reach tremendous commercial success with records such as “Fuck tha Police,” and “Gangsta Gangsta.” The 1988 album marked the beginning of the gangsta rap era, and would help to propel the solo careers of respected artists Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, DJ Yella and MC Ren.
Narrated by Chris Rock, the Vh1 Rock Doc plans to tell the story of childhood friends who grew to become explosive figures in the late '80s and early '90s. Their lyrics about police violence, gang terror, and shooting sprees would lend a voice to the voiceless, and would, in the process, scare much of white and corporate America.
The documentary will air interviews with Ice Cube [click to read], DJ Yella, Eazy-E's widow Tomica Woods-Wright, former manager Jerry Heller, Ice-T, and John Singleton, and will feature rarely-seen footage, photos, music, and interviews from the group's early days.
N.W.A.: The World's Most Dangerous Group premieres Friday, October 3rd at 11pm ET.
