News Bits: Lil Wayne & Bow Wow In Katrina Film, The Original Roc Boys Come Out
Titled Hurricane Season, the film is adapted from the true life story of coach Al Collins. Release date and the roles of the two rappers have yet to be revealed.
In other news, last year, Jay-Z's 10th studio album American Gangster [click to read] debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The second single off the album, "Roc Boys (And the Winner is...)", is most remembered for its triumphant horns and anthemic beat.
However, Hova's production team, consisting of Diddy and The Hitmen was inspired by a lesser-known group called The Menahan Street Band. "Roc Boys" borrowed the sample from the band's track, "Make the Road By Walking" (off of their soon to be released album of the same title). The memorable sample helped to make "Roc Boys" the number one song of 2007, according to Rolling Stone.
The Menahan Street Band includes a collaboration of musicians ranging from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings to the Budos Band, and was brought together by musician/producer Thomas Brenneck who has worked with artists such as Amy Winehouse.
Influenced by Soul, Funk, and Afrobeat, the talented young Brooklynites delve into a soulful exploration of instrumental music. In a way, says Brenneck, were simply the streets unofficial house band.
The Menahan Street Band's debut LP, Make the Road By Walking, comes out on October 14th.
