Trick Trick Writes Movie With Ice Cube, Talks Album Delay

Detroit's Trick Trick has a sophomore album with production and appearances by Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eminem and the late Proof. The chemistry with Ice Cube was so good, that both artists are working on a movie script. But the last couple weeks have seen the Motor City emcee's name make headlines for all the wrong reasons. After being accused of orchestrating an attack on Yung Berg, which ended with his labelmate temporarily being robbed of his jewelry, Trick Trick explained the rationale for moving the release date of his new album, The Villain.

"I started doing work on the album a while ago, and I think its gonna speak for itself," Trick Trick says of his Koch Records debut. "People want to make it sound like I set him up. I even pushed my album back so that shit wont run together. Im not trying to blow up off of this little nigga getting rushed. I dont personally like that ignorant ass shit."

While the album's title seems to go against that statement, Trick Trick says he had totally different reasons for the title of his latest work.

"Ive been getting called that for a long time," Trick says of the moniker that doubles as his album title. "Now Im answering to it like, 'If thats what yall want me to be, then thats what the fuck I am. But let me explain to you why Im like this. Let me explain why you look at me this way, and maybe I can change your mind.'"

As for the album's many cameos, the reluctant villain thinks they can only help his cause.

"Ive always been a fan of all their work," Trick says, in reference to Eminem, Dr. Dre, Kid Rock and Ice Cube. "Its not just a producer-artist or an artist-artist relationship. Were like family now."

That family atmosphere may spread from the recording booth to theaters, as Ice Cube and Trick Trick are in the developmental phase of the feature film Gang Squad.

"We have a task unit here in Detroit called Gang Squad," says Trick. "They only deal with gangs, drugs and guns. Every city has its share of dirty-ass cops, and Detroit is no different. The movie is about these four dirty motherfuckers who are mixed up in the street also. It's a touchy subject and when the movie comes out, we might have a problem shooting it. They're going to realize that these characters come from the actual Detroit Gang Squad."

While Cube is currently promoting his Raw Footage album and his latest feature film, The Longshots, Trick Trick is handling some additional work behind the scenes.

"You can look for production to start on that in the spring of 2009," says Trick Trick. "We're actually expanding the script so Vince Orlando and Ice Cube can make whatever changes they need to. I would rather have it done under CubeVision Films, because Cube is the best."
