In The Heights, a Broadway musical which takes place in the New York City Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights, has been nominated for an astonishing 13 Tony Awards.

The show, which features Hip Hop, Salsa, Merengue and Soul Music, features facets of the Hip Hop culture such as emceeing, graffiti, b-boying and beat-boxing. The story is of a bodega owner named Usnavi and the fellow immigrants living in his neighborhood. In The Heights brings Hip Hop to the forefront of Broadway, as it has garnered the most Tony Award nominations of any Broadway show in 2008.

The writer and composer of In The Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda, previously founded a Hip Hop improvisational theater troupe called “Freestyle Love Supreme.” Eventually, he took his talents to the Broadway stage, which has resulted in the following Tony Award nominations: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical,Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics), Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations.

UPDATE:In The Heights won some of the biggest awards of the night, including Best Choreography, Best Orchestration, Best Music and Lyrics (by Lin-Maneul Miranda), and the greatest honor of the night – Best Musical.

Miranda did not hesitate to bring Hip Hop to the stage, as he rapped a freestyle as his acceptance speech for Best Music and Lyrics. In addition, the cast of In The Heights performed a song from the musical, “96 Thousand.”
