Barack Obama Wins Iowa
After being name building a huge buzz nationally and being name checked by Common, Talib Kweli and others, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama won the nations first Democrats caucus last night in Iowa.
The 46-year-old Senator from Illinois finished with 38 percent of the vote, with former Senator John Edwards taking second. Hillary Clinton finished third.
"They said this day would never come, Obama said, addressing his supporters at his campaign headquarters. They said our sights were set too high. ... But on this January night, on this defining moment in history, you have done what the cynics said we couldn't do.
You did what the state of New Hampshire can do in five days," he added, in reference to the next caucus.
During the speech, Obama reinforced his ongoing message of change, and issued several promises to Iowa votersand the rest of the nationabout what he would do if elected president.
"I'll be a president that ends this war in Iraq and finally brings our troops home, who restores our moral standing, who understands that 9-11 is not a way a way to scare up votes but a challenge that should unite America and the world against the common threats of the 21st Century," he said against a backdrop of thunderous applause.
Obama appeared at the rally with his family, wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia and in a time in which many candidates cater to their bases, Obama spoke of uniting Democrats, Republicans and independents.
"We came together as Democrats, as Republicans and independents, to stand up and say we are one nation, we are one people and our time for change has come."
On the other side of the fence, Republican candidate Mike Huckabee took first in the GOPs caucus.
