Washington Redskins standout Sean Taylor died this morning at the age of 24.

The player, who was in his Miami home rehabilitating his knee, was shot as the result of an apparent break-in. Sources from ESPN say that he and his girlfriend had heard a noise, and just as Taylor was getting up to investigate, the intruder burst into the room and fired twice, hitting Taylor’s upper leg.

After nearly six hours of emergency surgery to repair a severed artery in his upper leg, Doctors were cautiously optimistic. At one point, the athlete squeezed one of his nurses’ hands when he tried to regain consciousness.

“Maybe he was trying to say goodbye or something,” said Richard Sharpstein. “It’s a
tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful, humble, talented
young man, and had a huge life in front of him. Obviously God had other
plans.”

During his NFL career, Taylor did have some controversy. On separate occasions, he skipped his mandatory rookie symposium, got caught driving drunk, and was accused of brandishing a gun at a man during an argument concerning stolen vehicles. He was also fined numerous times for his hard-hitting ways, incurring both late hit and unnecessary roughness calls.

Despite all this, Taylor’s teammates insisted he was turning the corner and had reformed his behavior after the birth of his daughter Jackie, who is now 1.
