As many know, legendary producer/rapper J Dilla suffered for over three years with an incurable blood disease, and had also been diagnosed with lupus before his untimely passing. He leaves behind a body of work which will be loved and rediscovered for years to come. The Dilla Foundation, dedicated to raising money and awareness for The Alliance for Lupus Research, is asking for your assistance in helping the cause! Come out and walk, sponsor a walker or team, give a donation (even a dollar helps), or volunteer at an event. You can walk alone, join a team, or even start your own. Better yet, support the fight against Lupus and celebrate Dilla Dawg by starting a team of your own and naming it “J Dilla Project”.
Dilla fan Lesley Keller is the group leader for the upcoming NYC walk this weekend. “I got into Dilla’s music way back during the “Fantastic Vol 2″ era,” she tells DX, “and I’ve been listenin to him ever since. The upcoming New York City walk will also be accompanied by a fund raiser for Dilla‘s mom, affectionately known by the Hip Hop community as “Ma Dukes”. After seeing Ma Dukes became inundated with thousands of dollars in medical bill debt associated with Dilla‘s extensive treatments, close friend and fellow Detroit music legend DJ House Shoes decided to hold an event for people to come together and try to alleviate some of her costs. 100% of profits made will go to Ma Dukes. Shoes tells DX, “I hit up Evil Dee (of Da Beatminerz)about a month ago to see if he had leads on a venue to do a pre-party to raise awareness for the walk. He told me he had a weekly gig starting the Thursday before the walk.So we made it happen. And its gonna be crazy. Alotta surprises Thursday night…Time to get that money up. Gotta do more than put Jay’s picture an your Myspace page. Make a contribution. Put in some work. And don’t just come to the party. Be there at 8:45 in the morning on Saturday!— Sacrifice.
