After reports surfaced about R&B singer Brandys role in a fatal car crash, prosecutors in California now say she may face charges behind the incident.

The police investigation into the four car collision found the singer at fault.

Officers are urging the district attorneys office to file vehicular man slaughter charges.

In California , the offense is a misdemeanor and carries a maximum penalty of up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

It also means prosecutors determine that the death did not result from gross negligence, a spokesman for the city attorney said.

The accident occurred Dec. 30 on the 405 Freeway near Ventura Blvd. While driving her Land Rover, Brandy rear ended the vehicle in front of her which was in the process of slowing down. 38-year-old wife and mother Awatef Aboudihaj, the driver of the vehicle was killed after her vehicle collided with a third car and careened into the freeway median.

Her vehicle was also struck again by a fourth car.

Activist Najee Ali of Project Islamic Hope has come to the singers aid, saying she is being unfairly targeted by police due to her celebrity.

"Brandy has publicly expressed condolences to the victim's family, Brandy wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash," Ali states. "This was a tragic accident. Our coalition feels that the [California Highway Patrol] is using Brandy as a political trophy and their recommendation is unfairly targeting her for prosecution because of her celebrity."

He is set to hold a press conference concerning the incident and the charges today at noon Pacific Time in Los Angeles Leimert Park .
