Terrace Martin had to take his collaborator Preston Harris aside during Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly sessions, according to an interview the producer conducted on Home Grown Radio.
Martin walked in the studio just as Preston Harris was just finishing up some vocals for K. Dot. Lamar and Harris were vibing to their music, and then Harris started to ask the rapper some questions. Martin didn’t think that was the right time.
“I know where his heart is at,” Martin says. “He don’t mean no harm. I just taught him something…He snuck his fan mode in real smooth, though.

“Not to be funny, but them two To Pimp A Butterfly sessions were serious. [Hums] — serious,” he continues. “That shit was like the Panthers, and it was just serious, and no fucking pork, and it was just serious man.”
Terrace Martin and HS87 artist Preston Harris also collaborated on “All Year” and “You & Me” last year.
Later in the interview, Martin spoke on his own place in the industry.

“You can’t bring all the homies into the club just yet,” he says. “Not just yet. You can sneak us in there here and there but we competing with the heavy hitters. Until we prove otherwise, I think we prove otherwise.”
