Killer Mike has always been one to speak his mind when it comes to social issues.

On Friday (April 24), Mike initiated a talk with students of MIT in Cambridge about being an independent artist and major label influence on artists.

“What El-P said 20 years ago was right–be independent as fuck,” he said when asked about the major label construct in Hip Hop music (via Billboard). “If you want to pull out of that construct, you have to start your own farm. If you’re an abolitionist, you’re not going to get money from the federal government, so you have to get it on your own.”

The Atlanta native also took aim at educational institutions and says they’re afraid to approach certain subjects.

“Colleges get scared when people write mean shit about the people they bring,” he said after prefacing that MIT asked him not to speak about it, “I’m here because I’m qualified to be here… I’m not here to get you to buy a CD … I believe in smart people … The intelligence in this room is the only thing that can save this country.”

Killer Mike answered numerous other questions during the night including everything from education to the success of white rappers. Mike was also recently invited to the White House Corespondents Dinner set to take place Saturday night (April 24).
