After reciting a verse from his “Gucci Zoo” record for Los Angeles’ Power 106, New Jersey rapper Fetty Wap revealed why his verse on the song is one of his favorites. He spoke on the days when no one “really knew Fetty Wap” and recalled an incident in which he was robbed and hit with a gun near his high school.

On “Gucci Zoo,” Fetty raps “Please miss me with that gun shit if you do not let them go / Cause big ZooWap with crip and he ain’t scared to let you know.”

While speaking with Power 106, the rapper revealed that following the robbery he learned to trust no one and “keep your gun off safety.”

“Back in the days ain’t nobody really fuck with me,” Fetty Wap said. “I mean, nobody really knew Fetty Wap. Even the people that say they know me don’t even know me. You know what I mean? And that’s real shit though. Eastside High School, back in Paterson, New Jersey, I started doing illegal activities and shit. And I got robbed by my high school and shit. Nigga bust me in the head with the [bottom] of the pistol and shit. And after that I guess that was my way of learning. Don’t fuck with nobody. Don’t trust nobody. Keep your gun off safety.”

Fetty Wap later spoke on growing up in his neighborhood in Paterson, New Jersey. He revealed that his ‘hood is sometimes referred to as “Harlem” since those in the area are “known for getting money.”

“I’m from 12th and 22nd. We call that ‘Harlem,’” he said. “Cause we different than everybody else. Harlem—Everybody say ‘Niggas get money like Harlem niggas.’ You know what I’m saying? Harlem known for getting money. We known for getting money…We was really living that lifestyle, bruh. That shit was real life for me. That shit wasn’t no fairy tale…Wasn’t no niggas in the hood doing what we was doing.”
