Mumford & Sons On Jay Z’s Tidal: “That’s Just Commercial Bullshit”

Mumford & Sons frontman, Marcus Mumford took aim at Jay Z’s recently announced Tidal streaming service. During an interview the The Daily Beast, Mumford referred to the artist-ran platform as “commercial bullshit.”

“What I’m not into is the tribalistic aspect of it—people trying to corner bits of the market, and put their face on it,” Marcus Mumford said. “That’s just commercial bullshit. We hire people to do that for us rather than having to do that ourselves. We just want to play music, and I don’t want to align myself with Spotify, Beats, Tidal, or whatever. We want people to listen to our music in their most comfortable way, and if they’re not up for paying for it, I don’t really care.”

Mumford & Sons says that the band would not have joined Tidal even if they had been invited by Jay Z. The UK band—which won Album Of The Year for Babel during the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards—also disagrees with Taylor Swift’s reasoning for removing her music from Spotify.

“We don’t want to be part of some Tidal ‘streaming revolution’ nor do we want to be Taylor Swift and be anti-it,” said Mumford & Sons guitarist, Winston Marshall. “I don’t understand her argument, either. The focus is slightly missed. Music is changing. It’s fucking changing. This is how people are going to listen to music now—streaming. So diversify as a band. It doesn’t mean selling your songs to adverts. We look at our albums as stand-alone pieces of art, and also as adverts for our live shows.”

    1. Who gives a crap? These dudes aren’t associated with the culture in any shape, form or manner, so their opinion is pretty irrelevant at this point. And they’re full of commercial hits, but yet pose as some backyard hippie band. Yeah, go f*ck yaselves.

    2. We don’t care about Mumford and bums. They’re full of commercial bullshit themselves, but yet pose as some backyard, treehugging blue grass group. Go F$#ck yaselves.

      1. Says the guy trying to make peace with Lil Wayne and Young thug because they are your 2 favorite artists. I remember you

    3. tribal??? tribalistic????? the tribe is a hand that will slap you in the face!!!!! its only “commercial billshit” cuz a black artist by the name of jay z with the biggest influence in the world is on the face of it!!!!!!

      1. No, it’s commercial bullshit because it complicates the market and places more restrictions on customers. I like Jay-Z but I’m not taking out multiple subscriptions just to fucking listen to Beyonce.

    4. It’s pretty hilarious when MUMFORD AND SONS call you mainstream bullshit. Jay-z needs to rethink his life at this point.

    5. The fuck do these white boys know about the music business? Jay Z makes more in a month than they guys do in two years, they have no right to utter a damn word.

      1. JayZ knows nothing about the music business…he’s a figurehead…and they’re right…eff his streaming BS…

      2. Does money=entitlement to opinion? If these guys don’t make enough cash to speak their mind then what right do you have to speak yours? I’m sure they make more in a month then you do in 2 years also so i guess that makes their opinion more valuable then yours..

      3. Yeah, what do these guys who domestically went multi platinum on both their albums (at a time when hardly anyone actually purchases music) know about the music business.

Out here acting like winning Grammy’s for best album of the year, and being platinum 20x over internationally gives them the right to talk about the music business.

        The gull on these guys…

    6. Of course this doesn’t stop Mumford & Suns from being utter trash. Despite Tidal being utterly silly nonsense, Jay-Z has far more worth in his catalog than these Beatles-wannabes ever will have.

      1. Well they have sold 10’s of millions of albums worldwide and several millions domestically, so there’s that…..

    7. If they did sell 20 mill albums then yes this means they are considered mainstream…they too are commercial bullshit
