With his own brand of vulnerable Hip Hop on full display with his latestA Special Episode Of EP released earlier this month, Open Mike Eagle stopped by the HipHopDX offices recently and explained why he thinks corporate interests have long favored a different type of music for the mainstream.

“I remember in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Rawkus was happening—Soundbombing, Lyricist Lounge—you would start to see that these entities would have videos on Rap City next to all the big acts,” Open Mike Eagle said in an interview with Andre Grant that premiered as a part of today’s DX Daily. “I remember every year, thinking, ‘Okay, here we go. This is the year! This is when the pendulum starts swinging back in the other direction.’ But I don’t think that’s ever gonna happen. I don’t think that’s ever gonna happen on a level—I don’t think business will ever invest in personal, fragile Hip Hop the way that it does the  materialistic stuff. Inherent in that is this consumerism that helps that to make money perpetually.”
