Hip Hop Album Sales: FKA Twigs, Tank, Twista, Watsky, Dilated Peoples

Iggy Azalea's "The New Classic," Trey Songz's "Trigga" and Linkin Park's "The Hunting Party" are still making chart noise as new releases break the Top 50.

This week on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, Linkin Park’s The Hunting Party earned a significant boost, jumping from #41 to #14. Iggy Azalea retained a Top 20 spot at #17 with The New Classic. Meanwhile, Trey Songz landed at #26 with his latest, Trigga. Beyond these three mainstays, the chart also featured several debuts this week.

Tank's Stronger Arrives At #13

Tank's Stronger arrived at #13. The R&B album, which was released last week, sold 16,621 copies in its first week. The album features 10 cuts, including "You're My Star," "Nobody Better" and "Dance With Me." It appears one slot above Linkin Park's The Hunting Party, which was catapulted to #14 in its ninth week of availability.

FKA Twigs' LP1 Leaves Mark In Top 30

FKA Twigs’ LP1 reached the Top 30 this week. Twigs’ effort debuted at #30 with 10,370 units sold in its first week, a slot above Childish Gambino’s because the internet, which sold 10,244 copies in its 39th week of availability. FKA Twigs has been categorized as an R&B singer, but the artist says the genre labels have been evolving as her career has progressed. "It’s just because I’m mixed race," she said to The Guardian. "When I first released music and no one knew what I looked like, I would read comments like: ‘I’ve never heard anything like this before, it’s not in a genre.’ And then my picture came out six months later, now she’s an R&B singer. I share certain sonic threads with classical music; my song ‘Preface’ is like a hymn. So let’s talk about that. If I was white and blonde and said I went to church all the time, you’d be talking about the ‘choral aspect’. But you’re not talking about that because I’m a mixed-race girl from south London."

Watsky Walks Into Top 35 With All You Can Do

Watsky's latest, All You Can Do, is #33 this week. In its first week of availability, the album moved 9,707 units for Watsky, who made headlines last year when he jumped from a structure and injured fans. The album features several cuts, including "Grass is Greener," "Never Let It Die" and "My First Stalker."

Twista's Dark Horse Gallops Into Top 40

Twista’s Dark Horse made the Top 40 this week. Dark Horse arrived at #40 with 6,722 units sold in its first week of availability. The album features appearances by several stars, including Tech N9ne and Wiz Khalifa. The album earned high praise from several critics upon its release last week, including Homer Johnsen, who reviewed the effort for HipHopDX. Directors earned a 4.5 out of 5 in its DX review. Johnsen said the album "is a top-notch effort" from the trio, one that shows that "Dilated Peoples step up and deliver in every aspect."
