Killer Mike Says Run The Jewels' Next Album Is Relentless With Depth
Killer Mike says he and El-P explore new ground on the next Run The Jewels album.
Killer Mike and El-P released their collaborative Run The Jewels album to favorable reviews in July 2013, including a 4 out of 5 rating from HipHopDX. Now, as the duo prepares its follow-up album, Killer Mike explains what listeners can expect.
"They are going to jump out the window," Killer Mike says in an interview with XXL. "They are going to run through the wall like the Juggernaut. It’s a relentless record and it’s got some depth to it that we didn’t touch on in the same way in the last album. Hopefully people just enjoy it and have an experience with it."
Mike says that he and El-P hope to recapture some of the fan appreciation the duo gathered on their first album together as Run The Jewels.
"Hopefully people feel the same way," he says. "You can only hope for that, hope for the best and that people feel connected to what you are doing. I think people are going to be amped off this music in a sense. It’s the type of music that amps you up. There’s some moments of beauty on here that I’m really excited about. Me and Mike came together did some shit on here that we haven’t done before."
Run The Jewels' debut album, which was self-titled, was acclaimed for its lyrics and beats.
In May 2012, Killer Mike and El-P teamed up to release R.A.P. Music, a project billed as a Killer Mike solo album. The album earned a 4.5 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review.
"R.A.P. contains someone of the most thoughtful, well-executed commentary (both in style and substance) found in music since the days of Rage Against the Machine," DX said in its review of the album. "Throughout his career, Mike has steadily carved out an N.W.A-esque balance between lyrics that stick to your ribs and lyrics that smack you in the face. With El-P as its catalyst, R.A.P. Music puts Mike on display has he doles out unheard levels of indignation, fury, and passion.
