Study Shows 50 Cent's "In Da Club" Helps People Feel Empowered
Participants in a study who listened to songs by 50 Cent, 2 Unlimited and Queen felt more empowered than those who listened to cuts by The Notorious B.I.G., Baha Men and Fatboy Slim.
A report by The Society For Personality And Social Psychology claims that listening to certain 50 Cent, Queen and 2 Unlimited songs can help a person feel more empowered than if they listened to specific The Notorious B.I.G., Fatboy Slim and Baha Men tracks.
According to NME, social scientists with The Society For Personality And Social Psychology tested two groups of people. One group listened to 50 Cent's "In Da Club," 2 Unlimited's "Get Ready For This" and Queen's "We Will Rock You." These are considered "bass-heavy" tunes by the researchers. Those songs were placed in a "high-power" playlist. The other group listened to The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa," Baha Men's "Who Let The Dogs Out?" and Fatboy Slim's "Because We Can." Those songs were labeled "low-power."
The researchers say that the first group of people, those who listened to 50 Cent's "In Da Club," among other "high-power" tracks, was "more inclined to take control of situations such as job interviews and client meetings," according to the publication.
The people in the second group were considered "meeker in the same situations" and they reportedly "made more mistakes in a test measuring abstract thinking," as per NME.
A third group was also tested. This group listened to either playlist as they worked on several tasks. One of these activities included words shown with missing letters, such as P _ _ E R. The study found that those who listened to the "high power" playlist were more likely to use words related to strength, such as P O W E R. Those who listened to the low power playlist were reportedly more likely to use unrelated words, such as P A P E R, as per KellogInsight.
The study attempts to show that people who listen to bass-heavy music tend to feel more empowered than those who listen to songs with lower bass levels. Thus, the study recommends listening to bass-heavy cuts before a situation that would require a sense of confidence and empowerment, including job interviews and meetings with clients or bosses.
