Joey Bada$$ Chooses J Dilla Over DJ Premier For Favorite Producer

Joey Bada$$ says "B4.Da.$$" will include a beat from J Dilla, believes the album will be released before the year is up.

While speaking with Vlad TV in a newly-published interview, Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ provided a third option when asked if his favorite producer of all time is either Dr. Dre or DJ Premier. After being asked that particular question, the Pro Era lyricist revealed that his favorite producer of all time is the late J Dilla.

Joey Bada$$, who has worked with DJ Premier on numerous occasions, reemphasized that he would even choose Dilla over Premier. He went on to credit J Dilla for creating beats that hit him right in his heart and soul, before revealing that he’ll have a beat from Dilla on his upcoming album, B4.Da.$$.

“Just because every time I hear a J Dilla beat it hits me right in my heart,” Joey Bada$$ said. “It hits me right in my soul. You feel that shit every time. And not to say you don’t feel the Premier beat the same way, but it’s something about J Dilla it’s just—I don’t know. It’s like the eerie samples or however he cut his shit up. It just hit you right in your soul.”

During his interview with Vlad TV, Joey didn’t reveal a release date for B4.Da.$$ or speak in detail on the album’s features, but he did offer a breakdown of the theme for the project.

According to the rapper, B4.Da.$$ will touch on that moment in a person’s life when they realize they can do whatever they want.

“What it is is it’s a play on my name,” he said. “And I take you basically down the path of not just my life, but the path of life of any person before them getting into their dream state. And by dream state, I mean that moment when they figure out ‘Oh, I can do whatever I want. I can do this. I can do that. I can be this. I can be that.’ You feel me? That’s what the whole B4.Da.$$ theme and concept is. It’s the soundtrack to that moment in your life. To that moment when you chasing dreams. To that moment when you just trying to get this cream.”

Joey Bada$$ did reveal that he believes B4.Da.$$ will be released before the year is up. And in a past interview, the rapper informed fans that they can “expect pure greatness” on the album.

"Definitely a few surprises," Bada$$ said during an interview with Topman magazine in April. "But you can just expect pure greatness, you know, I’m really putting my all into this."

I've been producing for five years now and I can conclude that J Dilla is much more superior than DJ Premier. Dilla has a lot more diversity and versatility with his beats. DJ Premier often to me offers too many similar sounding beats/instrumentals. That's not to say he's bad, DJ Premier is probably the second greatest producer of all-time,however, J Dilla is much more skilled and monumental in my opinion. My top 5 would be: 1. J Dilla 2. DJ Premier 3. RZA 4. Pete Rock 5. Dr Dre

all love to premo, but dilla dawg all day. the ummah. Soulquarians, jaylib, slum village. he had hits from everyonce from, common, tribe, pharcyde, de la, badu, busta rhymes, janet jackson, kweli, and i know non of you cats know about mood, hi-tek's first crew from cincy back in the late nineties. Let's not forget his solo albums, ruff draft and the untouchable, best instrumental hip hop album of all time donuts, only rivaled by madlib's shades of blue, and peanut butter wolf's my vinyl ways a ton. Illmatic, sun rises in the eat, gangstarr, and the ready to die beats are dope. but dilla is a god.

I think Premo is a better PRODUCER in the sense of crafting albums, launching careers, and just having an overall impact on hip-hop history. But Dilla to me is the better BEATMAKER. Beat for beat, I don't think anybody ever will be able to rival Dilla. He just had that hip-hop magic that hits you in your soul.

Premo sounds the same most of the time....and im a 35 year old who has been listening to hip-hop all his life,he was diffrent with Jeru but for the most part..meh,as for Dilla he was eclectic .. HIP-HIP fan all the way from Gaborone,Botswana Africa-T.O.Kgamanyane
  • aeyo
Love Premo, love Pete Rock but it's DILLA PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!

This lil nicka young....lol Dilla over fuckin Dj premier lmmmmfao.....Dilla was mad nice but name one cd he produced entirely that was nicer than Gang Starr moment of truth, Step in the Arena, fuck it the whole Gang starr Catalog.....plus whole cd by Jeru the damaja, Group Home, Big shug, Freddie Foxx, Afu ra.....Dilla had a nice project w slum village and some other nice shhh but gtfoh......everytime someone dies they are put on a pedestal and he deserves to be mentioned as a great but lets not get carried away.im not so sure he is better than Havoc of Mobb Deep, Pete Rock, ....name a whole cd he produced better than mobb deeps infamous and hell on earth.....or pete rocks mecca and the soul brother....id even put erick sermon and dj quik over son....
    • ok
honestly i think premos best work was with group home and jeru, but j dilla had those two tapes he did with slum village that are both equally as epic. it's a close debate, and J Dilla's sound actually evolved whereas Premo's regressed
    • ok
and I forgot Champion Sound, and not to mention his work on the last two A Tribe Called Quest albums

Premos beats aint as good as they used to be and sorry you play any dilla beat then play a premo beat afterwards it blows Premiers shit out. Premos drums and patterns BASIC and stiff GTFO Detroit producers got all the soul that's were it comes from dummys.
  • miles
wow at some of these comments. anyone who uses an mpc, a real mpc made by roger linn not that corny shit ya'll use now....anyone who makes beats will tell you J Dilla is the greatest of all time. He was the greatest before he died. that clown saying Dilla is overrated doesnt know shit about hip hop.

I like what I've heard of Dilla, but Premo... Above the clouds Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers Up Against The Wall (Getaway Car Remix) Mass Appeal The list goes on, I don't think any producer has perfected flipping off key jazz samples like he did.
    • ok
how bout listen to Proof - Life (Prod. by J Dilla) Pharcyde - Runnin (Prod. by J Dilla) J Dilla - Won't Do Jaylib - The Red Slum Village - Yes Yes Don't get me wrong, it's a close debate, but I think J Dilla's drums make him the better producer.
    • Anonymous
yeah its all personal opinion. cant go wrong with either one!
  • RC
It is his opinion, but yea personally I'd have to go with Premier as well. No disrespect, Dilla is cool but I really think he's a bit overrated & put on pedestal especially by underground heads. If he didn't die at a young age I doubt he'd get as much praise as he does now.
    • Mike D
Agree to disagree. But, I have to point out that Johnny J, a well known and respected producer who has been on 100 2pac songs and has sold Millions of records died a few years back. I haven't seen any sort of Johnny J uprising...Dilla was something special. Real talk yo.
    • Anonymous
when i listen to pac im not listening to the beats probly johnny j didnt get recognized
  • Not Impressed
Primo is played out. Why put him on your album? Stop regressing Badass. I'm not impressed.
    • Anonymous
Lemme guess, you want him to throw DJ Mustard or Mike Will on his album? Joey's style is throwback 90's. He can make whatever music he wants and not give a fuck what people like you have to say about it.

Naw, Premo, is better. Go and check out thegrandreport(dot)com, they have some good videos on there too!
