Meek Mill Discusses Racism, Civil Lawsuit Against Philadelphia Police

"I don't dislike cops," the rapper says. "I got family that's cops, friends that's cops. Why would I even take this amount of time to do all this?"

After news that Meek Mill lost a civil suit against the city of Philadelphia and its Police Department earlier this week, the rapper spoke with Complex about the case and his reaction to the decision. The suit stems from a 2012 incident in which the rapper claims he was pulled over and had his vehicle unlawfully searched. Mill alleges that the traffic stop conflicted with a private jet flight and public appearance he was set to make as well as affected his endorsement deal with Puma negatively.

“The cops just came out on top,” he said. “The cop I had a lawsuit on, he had about so many complaints about him. He got fired right after I sued them. But he didn’t get fired for me suing them. On the day of court it was like they just believed the cop. I didn’t know that cop had 80 priors when I sued them. I found that when my lawyer investigated and found that out. You know how it go in Federal Court. It’s a jury. They pick a jury. I respect the opinion of the jury but most of the people in the jury was White. They don’t really like understand. They might live on a farm, some of these people live in like suburban areas, they don’t understand the culture where I come from. All they gonna understand is, ‘He’s a cop and he’s not a cop.’ They just went with his word. I was basically like, ‘I’m making a good amount of money. Why would I even waste time on suing this cop or taking any action on this guy.’ I don’t dislike cops. I got family that’s cops, friends that’s cops. Why would I even take this amount of time to even do all this? I had to go to court from 9:00 AM to 4:00 AM everyday this week. I just don’t feel it man. That’s some old timer shit. Most of all the people that’s racist [are] 80 years old. They on their way out anyway. I see ten years from now all that shit’ll be erased in the world. That will be like the past.”

Mill’s civil suit was directed not only at the city of Philadelphia but also at specific officers in question.

“I’m just against racist shit,” he later said when asked about his reaction to the recent Donald Sterling fiasco. I’m not racist. I do shows—I say like ‘nigga’ in my raps a lot—my shows are half White, half Black. I look at the White kids in the crowd they say ‘nigga’ to the song. They not saying it in a disappointing way. I allow it at my shows because if you’re not saying it in a form of disrespect, why take it that way?”

Asked about the possibility of a so-called conscious thread in his music, Mill said he raps “about that shit all the time.”

“About being judged,” he added. “You don’t gotta be Black you could just be anybody. If a White kid move in my neighborhood in the hood where I’m from I don’t think he should be treated any different because he’s a different skin color or anything. In our hood it’s White, Black, everything. They might be into dirt bikes the way we into dirt bikes. We all ride together. We ride as one. If he fall and bust his head we gon’ sit there and wait for that guy to get up and make sure he in good shape no matter if he Black, White, Puerto Rican, anything. He’s still a human being.”

Gained a lot of respect for him from this. Although, racism definitely won't be gone in 10 years. Humans suck. Racism from every is still hapening..from personal experience I actually see it more toward whites. But like I said, racism is still happening, too much.

A dirty cop pulls you over and holds you for 12 hours with no charges and not even a single parking ticket and the jury doesent see it as unlawful or harassment. The Police Officer in the civil suit is notorious for his aggression and profiling but he has been able to escape any major backlash by saying that his victims were playing rap music about guns and drugs and therefore they deserved to be harassed.

Sounds to me like the nigga should have just let them search his car if he didn't have anything to hide or prove! Could have made his flight and got his money.
    • Anonymous
sounds to me like the cops don't have a right to search shit without probable cause.. its the point that the police shouldn't have searched his car without probable cause.. just because they have a badge doesn't mean they can do whatever they want.. people like you are the reason why crooked cops exsist.. since you don't got nothing to hide, how about you let the police in your house and let them tear everything apart, and make a mess looking for drugs..

I don't feel sorry for these millionaires, this guy got $600,000 from Puma and had a show for $40,000 all in one weekend according to the lawsuit so he made in one weekend what some poor people will never make.

Whites will always outnumber us on juries because they outnumber us in America, Philly is 45% Black but the jury pools are notorious for being disproportionately white in civil cases. A lot of Blak folks don't want to be on jury duty, and ant afford a day off work.

since when do they have a choice?

Puerto Ricans and white's everywhere will be happy to know that if they ever find themselves in Philadelphia riding dirtbikes illegally through the streets and they happen to fall and hurt themselves, Meek Mill will be there to make sure you're okay because we're all still humans.

I have to sympathize with Meek Mills, its very tiring to live day to day in recognition of your skin color...I really hope one day South Africa my country will find terms to live together or at least respect each other.

Keep ya head up Meek. And stop shouting all the time.

"Nicca please", you made a career off of disrespecting, promoting crack and threatening Black people, now you want to cry racism and racial profiling. You can't argue an arrest is racially motivated when you make music about you and your friends ability to commit violence and deal drugs, and how you really are about that life. He aligned himself with William Robberts, who promotes cocaine distribution. I agree that he has the right to sue. We also have the right to laugh at his dumb ass for promoting crime then getting mad when the cops suspect him of crime. Make no mistake, these c00ns are getting paid to promote genocide and poison to us over the airwaves.
    • Anonymous
Sick freakish brainwashed c00ns think that just because you star in a Mafia movie or make a song about raping your mother like Eminem does it means the police have a right to pull you over and detain you for 10 hours. Whites will use any type of ignorant excuse to justify their racism which is why they believe that the content of your music justifys having your rights violated.
    • Anonymous
you ever hear about Common getting pulled over and harassed lately?
    • Anonymous
When is the last time Pharrell got detained and searched?
    • Anonymous
Just look at the stop N frisk laws in NY and the Trayvon verdict, all these people have to do is convince a white jury that street rappers have no human rights that should be respected and that they can be violated based on the lyrics in their songs.
    • Anonymous
yeah thats ridiculous. i mean its obvious meek mill is lying in all his raps and was never about that life they have no reason to stop and search him. he was a church boy.
    • Anonymous
"Whites will use any type of ignorant excuse to justify their racism which is why they believe that the content of your music justifys having your rights violated." All you need is one white republican on the jury who thinks rap lyrics are biographical or criminal confessions and you will lose your case. Cops will always pull you over if you riding 4 deep with dudes, then they tell the judge they pulled you over because of rap songs, LOL, when in doubt blame Rap music.
    • Anonymous
guess what, im a white guy and cops always pull me over at night when im driving with 4 dudes too, get over it they are just doing their job.
