Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs is set to deliver the commencement address at Howard University May 10, 2014, according to Howard University’s official website

Combs, who attended Howard in the 1980s, is also slated to receive an honorary doctorate in humanities this year, an honor Howard explained in a press release.

“In selecting the individuals who will be awarded honorary degrees, Howard University continues the tradition of identifying leaders whose work has clearly contributed to the advancement of their fields and the world,” Howard’s Interim President Wayne A.I. Frederick said in a statement. “We are honored to have Mr. Combs serve as our speaker. He sat in classrooms where our students sit, walked ‘The Yard,’ and like many students, his entrepreneurial spirit was sparked at Howard. We know he will inspire our class to work hard and to always strive for excellence.”

Combs is among five honorary degree recipients this year at Howard U, including CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and acclaimed Jazz artist Benny Golson.

In 2013, Diddy spoke about the importance of education when he donated $250,000 to Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship

“I think especially with kids from the inner city, they’re natural-born entrepreneurs because they have to figure out how to survive,” Diddy said. “So they have it in their DNA. An organization like this can show them that they have it inside of them and can show them how to relate what they’re learning in school to their street smarts and street savvy.”
