Hip Hop Week In Review: The Most Popular Stories The Week Of 04/06/14

50 Cent questions Troy Ave's music and is order to pay $16 million, while Quincy Jones says he can't get used to Lil Wayne.

This week, 50 Cent made headlines with the Top 2 most popular stories on the site. The Queens, New York rapper discussed Troy Ave’s use of his “In Da Club” single and was ordered to pay Sleek more than $16 million. Quincy Jones also garnered attention by commenting on Lil Wayne.

50 Cent Questions Use Of “In Da Club” Sample On Troy Ave’s “Show Me Love”

During an interview with DJ Drama, 50 Cent discussed fellow New York City emcee Troy Ave. 50 shared his praise for Troy, but also offered a critique of the rapper’s New York City: The Album song “Show Me Love.”

The selection samples 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” and, according to 50, he’s more impressed when Troy creates records of his own.

“I like it when you see an artist that has been influenced by the music that’s there,” 50 Cent said. “A lot of the melodies and the stuff that he actually—his choices. I really like when I hear something from him. When I hear something that was his idea that comes out. And I go ‘Oh shit.’

“That was cool. That was cool, but I hear me on the record at the same time,” he added, when asked about Troy Ave’s “Show Me Love.” “So, I’m like ‘Oh, alright.’ But that’s [him] getting into the groove…This was a mixtape. So, to take something that you thought was cool and melodies off of and go ahead and do it it’s cool to do that. We rewrite verses. The artist that did it the first time really worked. Or really that creative energy came from them. And we doing it over a new way with new lines. And you be like ‘He killed it.’ But it still wasn’t his from the very beginning.”

50 Cent Ordered To Pay Sleek More Than $16 Million

A judge has reportedly ordered 50 Cent to pay Sleek, a headphone company the New York rapper once worked with, more than $16 million, according to Radar Online

In 2013, Sleek sued 50 Cent. The G-Unit head was set to work with Sleek and invested $1 million to start his line of headphones through the company. However, 50 Cent eventually developed Sync by 50 with another company. Sync by 50, Sleek says, featured "basically the same design, mechanically" as the line it had previously developed for 50 Cent.

Quincy Jones Says It’s Hard To Get Used To Lil Wayne

Quincy Jones, the famed producer who has worked with various icons in music, television and film, including Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and Will Smith, was recently asked about how today's Pop acts stack up against artists he's worked with.

"When you come from the era of Ray Charles, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson, it gets hard to get used to Lil Wayne," Jones says in an interview with The National. "I just can’t handle it. There are some good singers out there. Mary J Blige can sing, so can Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. I know who they are. I also know who they aren’t, too."
