Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 3/9/2014

Rick Ross's "Mastermind" and Pharrell's "G I R L" appear as the top albums on this week's chart with ScHoolboy Q's "Oxymoron" dropping from last week's #1 position.

This week, Rick Ross and Pharrell hit the top of the Billboard Top 200 albums chart with Mastermind and G  I  R  L, respectively. The two albums, which have been anticipated by many of the artists' fans, make their first week impressions with the #1 and #2 slots. Meanwhile, ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron takes a drop in sales in its second week, with the Top Dawg Ent. rapper's sales figures decreasing by 78 percent.

Rick Ross's Mastermind Strikes At #1

Rick Ross's Mastermind appears as the #1 album on this week's chart. The project sold 179,215 copies its first week of availability. Recently, the album earned a 3 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "There isn’t anything really compelling about Rick Ross’s fictional tale anymore," HipHopDX said of the album. "It has become stale. There is no real wiggle room for his kingpin fallacy. There’s only one angle of interest left to explore: the truth. 'The truth will set you free, son. The truth will set you free,' executive producer Sean 'Diddy' Combs shouts smugly on 'Nothing,' assumedly at opposing rappers pretending to be something they’re not. How ironic. Ross could’ve used that kind of advice himself years ago. Perhaps he’ll take heed before the next mastering."

Pharrell's G  I  R  L Enters Charts At #2

Pharrell's G  I  R  L enters the chart this week at #2. The project sold 112,534 units in its first week of availability. The disc, which features the hit single "Happy," earned a 3.5 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "While G  I  R  L is too surface-level at times, it hits the target it’s aimed for," HipHopDX said of this release. "Pharrell wants summertime airplay, and any of these songs could survive on the radio. It’s also a nice tribute to feminine vigor, adding another notch to Pharrell’s ever-growing list of achievements. He has plenty to be happy about these days."

ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron Drops To #8

ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron appears as the #8 album on this week's chart. In its second week, the album sold 30,168 copies, a 78 percent decrease from last week's 138,630 units sold. Overall, Oxymoron has sold 169,118 copies. Yesterday (March 11), ScHoolboy Q spoke about his current deal with Aftermath Entertainment/Top Dawg Ent. “I already did wrong by signing a rap contract,” ScHoolboy Q said. “I’m not talking about TDE, but how we ventured off with the majors. I wish we would have still stayed indie. I don’t care about being on like 100 radios or shit like that. I love Interscope, but I wish I could have just stayed with TDE.”

Just bought #MasterMind today. Listened to it top to bottom. Its not Rozay's best Album (Deeper than Rap,Teflon Don were his best n are in my personal Classics->Port of Miami? had some classic tracks tho however those two albums were Rozay's Best-my opinion)But the album is dope. The album flowed from start to finish.Exceptional Tracks were Rich is Gangsta, Nobody, Devil is a Lie, Mafia Music 3, What a Shame, and Blk n Wht. The Album could hv done with more productions from the Usual suspects->Cool n Dre, The Inkredibles, Justice League, The Runners,DJ Toomp, JR Rotem...u know the usual producers whose productions work well to Rozay's Rapping style.

That desperate kid always shoots himself in the foot, he names a handful of artists that do big numbers and it isn't even 0.5% of the rappers who drop albums. What a clod.

"Ross the the sidekick of Jay-Z and Diddy who is supposed to be the biggest boss in rap and the next Biggie who had Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Kanye and a Jeezy reunion track on his album plus Diddy producing the whole thing. He failed to deliver and had to resort to remaking old Biggie and ODB songs because he's not creative enough to come with some original ideas to make his own timeless classic records." Ross has MMG, Diddy has Bad Boy and JayZ has Roc Nation while Kendrick and Schoolboy Q are label mates on TDE/Interscope, they are also a part of the collective known as Black Hippy. Dont be envious because a Gold selling rapper is capable of getting Platinum artists to feature on his #1 album. Nobody remade a Ol Dirty Bastard song you snow dog they used the phrase on an Ol Dirty Bastard song. Rozay has a catalog with 200 songs and none of them are remakes so kill the no creativity mess.

Ross did remake an ODB song. All of Ross' songs are the same shit.

"Anonymous: "180k is amazing for a studio gangster who never lived any of his raps" Also taking into consideration a much more hyped Schoolboy Q album only did 139k." ^ talk like this is when you know Quote-Man is pussy we know he don't like Kendrick, but why hate on Kendrick's team? The truth is Q's album landed in the same hood as Rozay and Pharrell. Top 3 first week. Quote-Man don't know the sales projections for Interscope nor the promo budgets for either rapper. But you have a chance to see it for yourself. Do YOU think Q got a bigger promo budget than Rozay HHDX reader? Be honest.

Q had a number 1 album, just like Ross
    • Anonymous
Q had alot more hype than Ross and should have had a comparable budget, especially for a debut.
    • Anonymous
      Nah, Ross had more hype.
