Ashanti Announces Work On Tupac Biopic Soundtrack
The singer says she's scheduled to collaborate with her "Braveheart" producer L.T. Hutton on "a lot of music" for the movie.
“I have an amazing opportunity,” she said, “L.T. Hutton, who actually produced the ‘I Got It’ record and ‘Scars’ and a bunch of other records on my album, he’s one of the CEO’s over at Morgan Creek [Pictures]. And him and I are gonna be doing like a musical score, or a lot of music, for the Tupac film coming in 2015. So I’m super excited about that, I’ve known about this for like two [or] three years now. He’s very, very excited about it. [It’s] very premature, early in stages—oh, and John Singleton is gonna be directing. So that’s gonna be sick, so I’m really, really excited about that.”
In February, Variety announced that Oscar nominated director and screenwriter John Singleton would be re-writing, directing, and producing the yet-to-be-titled project. Singleton, who earned his Oscar nods for his 1991 film Boyz n the Hood, directed Tupac in the 1993 film Poetic Justice. The 2 Fast 2 Furious director was also rumored to be in the running for a position as director of an upcoming N.W.A. film as well. According to Variety’s story, production on the Tupac film is slated to begin in June though upon publish, an actor had yet been cast for the part of Tupac. Last year, it was announced that Morgan Creek Productions and Emmett Furla Films were in final negotiations to partner on the movie.
Earlier this week, HipHopDX awarded Ashanti's Braveheart three out of five stars, calling it "concise and cohesive." "This is her way of declaring a comeback. It’s been six years since Ashanti’s fourth album, The Declaration, 12 years since her debut, and 11 years since her last Top 10 hit. There’s really no other way to listen to Braveheart."
