Asher Roth

UPDATE #3: Asher Roth reveals the stream of "RetroHash," which features Vic Mensa and ZZ Ward.

Asher Roth says people often ask him about where he's been and what he's been doing. He understands, he says, because he has not been able to sell music for five years. Now, however, he says he is ready to release an official album, the upcoming RetroHash, which is set to be released April 22.

"RetroHash, as a whole, is a record of renewal and self-discovery," Asher Roth says in an interview with Billboard. "It's not Asher trying to be this or that. It's just me trying to be me."

Asher Roth says he's spent the past year organizing and preparing to release RetroHash, an album that is slated to feature music that differs from his first official album, 2009's Asleep In The Bread Aisle, which features "I Love College," the rapper's breakout single.

"'I Love College' was an honest record that worked," Roth says. "But instead of doing that again and again, it's like, 'Let's try something new.'"

Part of what is new is balance, he says.

"I'm still out drinking beer," Roth adds. "I still like to partake in my recreational marijuana. It's one of those things where I want to operate at a high level. My whole thing with RetroHash is progress, every day, topping what I did yesterday…Sometimes you gotta eat Chick-Fil-A at 3:00 in the morning, but it's all about moderation."

RetroHash is set to feature production from the Blended Babies and features from ZZ Ward and Vic Mensa. Mensa is slated to appear as a guest on "Fast Life."

Roth is scheduled to perform RetroHash in its entirety at SXSW and other locations. An itinerary of the RetroHash performance dates can be found below courtesy of Billboard.

Mar. 15: Austin, TX (Blackheart Bar)
Apr. 2: Philadelphia, PA (The Barbary)
Apr. 4: Boston, MA (Brighton Music Hall)
Apr. 5: New York, NY (The Westway)
Apr. 22: Los Angeles, CA (Troubadour)

Asher Roth's Asleep In The Bread Aisle earned a 2 out of 5 rating on HipHopDX when it was released. Since this album, Roth has dropped several mixtapes, including 2013's The Greehouse Effect Vol. 2, which earned a HipHopDX consensus rating of "Just A Mixtape."

Damn yo, complex/dx yall a little hard on the Roth child there huh? I already know that joint with Spitta is gonna be the best on the album but do yall even listen to Asher tho. This has been Roth's style and direction from day one. Love what that nigga did with the Fast Life video. That shit is Hip-Hop. My generation has forgotten the meaning of balance. And its not our fault. Fully....

This will definitely be different than things hes done in the past but thats not a bad thing. That Tangerine Girl is a good song. If you havent listend to Pabst and Jazz, Searred Foi Gras and The Rawth EP, go listen to those and then I would respect your opinion of if you dont like his music. If you have only listened to his debut and Green House Effect 1 and 2..then you dont know much

I'm sure 50 hates dumb ass uneducated cocksuckers like yourself much more than he does young whiteboys who stay in their own lane and try to make a living... Especially considering that 50 would be no one without a white boy

The fact that you think the game is only for "G's" proves that you don't really know what you're talkin' about. Hip-Hop is a universal culture that extends across the entire planet. The originators of the culture (Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, etc.) never said it only for G's. They never said that white boys couldn't participate. Rap music is only one part of Hip-Hop culture. Learn where your culture comes from so you can stop lookin' ignorant.

He's only made one album, hes been on break for a while, so obviously no one has been listening to him.
    • Anon
um.....people still fuck with him. I still fuck with him. Did you even hear Pabst & Jazz? That mixtape was near-classic, if not classic. And the GE2 was dope as well.
