Asher Roth says people often ask him about where he’s been and what he’s been doing. He understands, he says, because he has not been able to sell music for five years. Now, however, he says he is ready to release an official album, the upcoming RetroHash, which is set to be released April 22.

RetroHash, as a whole, is a record of renewal and self-discovery,” Asher Roth says in an interview with Billboard. “It’s not Asher trying to be this or that. It’s just me trying to be me.”

Asher Roth says he’s spent the past year organizing and preparing to release RetroHash, an album that is slated to feature music that differs from his first official album, 2009’s Asleep In The Bread Aisle, which features “I Love College,” the rapper’s breakout single.

“‘I Love College’ was an honest record that worked,” Roth says. “But instead of doing that again and again, it’s like, ‘Let’s try something new.'”

Part of what is new is balance, he says.

“I’m still out drinking beer,” Roth adds. “I still like to partake in my recreational marijuana. It’s one of those things where I want to operate at a high level. My whole thing with RetroHash is progress, every day, topping what I did yesterday…Sometimes you gotta eat Chick-Fil-A at 3:00 in the morning, but it’s all about moderation.”
