After a campaign to project Ice Cube’s name on the Goodyear Blimp was successful last month, the project has released a video covering the event with an appearance from the rapper himself.
In the video, Cube describes the process of writing the song and the opportunity to participate in the recent charitable campaign. “I recorded the song in ‘92, and I got a lot of flack from my guys that was producing with me,” he said. “They said that I was a hardcore rapper and that talking about ‘it was a good day’ is sacrilegious to a hardcore rapper.”
Through Crowdtilt, a crowdfunding site, four friends going by the name “Team Good Day Blimp” pledged to raise $25,000 for a South Central youth charity called A Place Called Hope if Goodyear would participate by including Cube’s name on one of their blimps.

According to its website, A Place Called Home works with its “caring staff, supporters and volunteers… to provide South Central children and teens 8 years old – 21 years old with love, safety, enrichment, training, and opportunities through educational programs,counseling, and mentorship. After-school, weekend, and all-day summer programs and services include tutoring and homework support, as well as a full spectrum of instruction in the arts, athletics, dance and music. “
“The first time I saw the campaign to try to get my name on the blimp, I thought it was kind of cool,” the AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted rapper says in the video. “Once he told me it was for a charity, A Place Called Home, that’s when I really, really got super excited and interested about it… First I thought it was kind of like, something pretty cool that I never thought was really gonna catch traction. I was like ‘okay, this is gonna be a cool little campaign.’ And it all came together man, this is something cool for me because in doing the song ‘It Was A Good Day,’ I never thought my name would be on the blimp at all. And it’s great to be able to do something for A Place Called Home. This is what you’re in the business for, stuff like this.”
In the video, one of the friends responsible for starting the campaign described the motivation to contribute specifically to A Place Called Home. “The song is about a good day in South Central, so it only made sense to pick a charity that’s in South Central,” he said. “A Placed Called Home works with South Central youth and gives them a place to go after school.”

After the Blimp takes off, Cube can be heard saying “this is crazy” and “coolest shit ever” in the video. The short documentary covering the campaign can be streamed below.
Ice Cube’s recent single, “Sic Them Youngins On Them,” is the second from his upcoming Everythang’s Corrupt album. The rapper’s recent blockbuster Ride Along was also the most successful weekend film opening in the month of January ever.
