The Grammy Awards have featured numerous memorable moments and performances in the past and during this year’s ceremony, the awards will present something unprecidented.

According to The New York Times, The 2014 Grammys are slated to feature 34 couples being married on-air as Macklemore and Ryan Lewis perform their marriage equality-based song “Same Love.” Marriages will reportedly be between differnet groups of people, including people who are gay, straight, young, old and of different ethnicities and nationalities.

Ryan Lewis recently said that the weddings, “Will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.” Among those to be married is Lewis’ sister, Laura who is currently engaged to her boyfriend, Alex. “A night that is already tremendous for me, for the music,” Ryan Lewis said, “but to have my sister get married and my family there watching it—that makes it a whole other level of amazing.”

Madonna is set to join Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on-stage during their performance. Actress and former Hip Hop emcee Queen Latifah will officiate the nuptials for the weddings, which according to Neil Portnow, president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, who present the Grammys, says will create some controversy.

“I expect that people with all kinds of opinions might voice them, and that’s healthy,” he said. “We don’t need to stoop to the level of trying to find gimmicks and sensationalistic approaches to what we do.”

The 56th Grammy Awards is rumored to feature Jay Z and Beyonce opening the show, which will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Grammys have a long history of using performances to show the unification of people. In 2001, Elton John and Eminem performed together creating some controversy as many claimed Em’s lyrics were “homophobic” at the time.
