Macklemore, who is a recovering alcohol and drug addict, had a successful 2013 with chart-topping singles, a charting album (The Heist, which he made in 2012 with Ryan Lewis) and awards to boast about. However, in a recent interview, the rapper said he still understands the danger of relapsing.
“For me, what is a temptation is coming home off of the road, which is why this time period is interesting,” Macklemore said in an interview with ABC News. “This is when I’ve fallen back before.”
In 2008, Macklemore reached a particularly low point in addiction, a point in time which the rapper described in the ABC News interview.

“Isolation, broke, depressed, no reason to really live,” Macklemore said.
Still, Mack says he is able to continue understanding the importance of being “present,” according to the rapper.
“I don’t want to look back and be like, ‘You had it all, and you weren’t even present for it. You weren’t able to enjoy it,’” he said in the interview. “I want to be here, be now and be grateful.”

In August, Macklemore spoke about addiction’s impact on his life.
“If I wasn’t a drug addict, if I wasn’t somebody that always struggled with moderation, I wouldn’t have written songs like ‘Otherside’ or ‘Starting Over,'” Macklemore said in the second installment of his CRWN interview presented by MySpace. “Those records have connected with many, many, many people all over the world. You look at lapses and sure, at times, I’ll be like, ‘Man, I wish I was 22 years old, versus like, 30 years old. That would be awesome.’ But it wasn’t meant to be and I’m here. If I would have had this level of success at 22, I don’t know if I would be here.”
