Beyonce Makes Surprise Appearance At Walmart, Gives Away Gift Cards

While iTunes and Walmart hop on the Beyonce bandwagon, Amazon joins Target in opposition.

Though Target is uninterested in selling Beyonce's new, self-titled album, reportedly due to the project's exclusive digital content and its surprise release, Walmart seems to have no issues.

Beyonce appeared at a Tweksbury, Massachusetts Walmart on Friday (December 20), where she had a special surprise in store for customers.

"Walmart shoppers: it's Beyonce!" said the singer over the store's intercom. "I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. For everyone in the store right now, the first $50 of your holiday gifts are on me. Merry, Merry Christmas."

However, AllHipHop reports that another major retailer, Amazon, has joined Target's position of not selling Beyonce. Though Amazon has not released an official statement on the matter, the online retail giant is not directly selling the project, instead only selling through third-party retailers.

Target spokesperson Erica Julkowski spoke on Target's decision to not sell the album earlier this week. "At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections,"  she said. "While there are many aspects that contribute to our approach and we have appreciated partnering with Beyonce in the past, we are primarily focused on offering CDs that will be available in a physical format at the same time as all other formats. At this time, Target will not be carrying Beyonce's new self-titled album Beyonce."
