It’s unclear if rappers Jay Z and Kanye West will release a follow-up to their 2011 collaborative album, Watch The Throne, but according to producer-singer The-Dream, if the pair doesn’t release a sequel to Watch The Throne it would be far more impressive than if they did release such an album.

The-Dream further broke down that particular notion as he commented on fans becoming so used to getting what they want as far as music is concerned.

“I can’t really speak on that,” the IV Play singer said. “Hopefully, it is. It would be crazy not to do another one, in my mind. But also just to make—it’s almost one of those things where you know it’s gonna be a day when they stop making all the retro Jordans. You know it’s gonna stop. And you’re gonna be so mad, but you’re gonna be so grateful that you lived in that time that it was made. You know, in a time where people just get what they want all the time it actually would probably be more impressive that they don’t do it. To me, just looking at it from just a musician standpoint and just the purest of music, that they don’t do it…and just leave it what it is. But, you know, they’re probably gonna do it.”

The-Dream recently partnered with Jay Z and a handful of other producers to craft the beat featured on the rapper’s Magna Carta Holy Grail single “Holy Grail.” He also appeared on Cruel Summer, the compilation album from the Kanye West-led G.O.O.D. Music.

The-Dream Speaks On Relationship With Andre 3000, Writing For Celine Dion

Although The-Dream has collaborated with a number of artists in the Hip Hop and R&B realms, he ventured outside of those two genres when he penned “Skies Of L.A.,” a record featured on Canadian songstress Celine Dion’s Taking Chances album.

During his interview with Montreality, The-Dream reminisced on the moment he found out Dion made room for the song he wrote by taking another record off of her album.

“They were saying that she was finished doing her album,” said The-Dream. “And I said ‘Uh, not if you write a great song she not.’ And so we wrote the song. I remember going back to Atlanta and Trick called me and was like, ‘Celine’s taking one song off and she putting that song on. She loves it.’ And I was like ‘Alright. Well, get it poppin’…I think she had tried to cut the vocal like a couple of times in her way. And she was being vocal produced by somebody and she just strapped everything and said, ‘No, I want to sing it how he sang it. With that type of vibe.’ And that was the biggest thing coming from Celine.”

In addition to speaking on his work with Dion, The-Dream touched briefly on his relationship with Andre 3000, an artist he first met while attending Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta.

“I just ran into Andre not too long ago,” the North Carolina-born producer says. “Me and Dre went to high school like back in the day. I think I was in a couple of grades lower than him or whatever at that particular time at Washington High School. I think he was trying to get his credits to graduate and I was in 11th grade trying to get my credits to graduate from eleventh to twelfth. That whole city—everybody knows each other at the end of the day.”

The-Dream Comments On His Duties As Vice President Of A&R At Def Jam

Lastly, The-Dream addressed the rift between “the suits” and the creatives as he detailed his duties as vice president of A&R at Def Jam. According to the songwriter, there have been times when the higher-ups are “too far” into the creative process.

“I get to be the creative person that sits in that room,” said The-Dream. “But with some type of rational idea and not just straight artist because I understand even by running a business as a songwriter, people have to make money. I get that. What I try to apply to it though is you can’t completely go off numbers to try to sell something creative. You have to come up with other creative ways to sell it. And right now the labels are having a hard go at it because the suits are, they’re too far in the room. They’re too far in the creative place.”

Although The-Dream has played a role in the creation of a number of well-known songs and albums, it wasn’t until 2007 that he decided to release an album of his own. Titled Love Hate, the LP included guest appearances from Rihanna and Fabolous and was followed by the release of Love vs. Money, Love King, Terius Nash: 1977, and The-Dream’s most recent album, IV Play.

On top of the title of singer, songwriter, and producer, The-Dream may soon add the title of author to his resume if Seeing Red, a book he’s currently working on is released.

Seeing Red is a book that I’m working on right now,” he said. “It’s just about what color kind of defines what your mentality is…Everybody asked me about this period that I went into mentally. When I started writing songs and wanting certain things for myself. And red was the only color that I could see.”
