Lauryn Hill Released From Prison Following Three-Month Sentence

Lauryn Hill no longer serving time at a Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut after finishing a three-month sentence for tax evasion.

It’s been several weeks since former Fugees member Lauryn Hill turned herself in to authorities to begin a three-month prison sentence, and as of today (October 4) the singer/rapper has finished her sentence. According to TMZ, Hill was released this week after being incarcerated since July 8 of this year at a Danbury, Connecticut prison.

Hill received her prison sentence in May, just hours after she paid close to $1 million in back taxes owed to the government. Money owed on behalf of Hill began to add up several years ago when she refused to file taxes from 2005 to 2007.

The songstress was eventually taken to court in 2012 where she plead guilty after admitting that she intentionally chose not to file taxes for the years mentioned. In a Tumblr post released around the time of her court appearance last year, Hill stated that her decision “to withdraw from society” affected her ability to pay taxes.

“My intention has always been to get this situation rectified,” said Hill in her blog post. “When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes. This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.”

Hill’s release this week was also accompanied by the release of a new record from the singer titled “Consumerism.” Similar to her previous release, “Neurotic Society,” Hill takes an in-depth look at corporate greed, racism, and a variety of other topics on “Consumerism” as she raps, “Modernism has created modern prisons/Neo-McCarthyisms, new colonialisms.”

According to MTV News, the record was created prior to Hill’s prison sentence and finished through a series of phone calls made with Hill during her incarceration.
