Dom Kennedy Says West Coast Rap Is On Top

Dom Kennedy and Nipsey Hussle recently appeared on DJ Skee's "SKEE Live" program. Dom Kennedy cites Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and Macklemore as artists pushing rap forward.

Dom Kennedy and Nipsey Hussle explained why they believe the West Coast scene is currently Hip Hop’s most prominent during their appearance on DJ Skee’s “SKEE Live” yesterday (October 1).

Following the commercial success of Kendrick Lamar’s debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ The Heist—both of which have been certified platinum by the RIAA—Kennedy said he feels like “a lot of the younger artists are taking it farther.”

“I think it’s been a long time coming; a lot of work in progress,” he said during his interview with DJ Skee. “I feel like the West Coast music is on top right now. To the mainstream, consciousness, you have Kendrick [Lamar]ScHoolboy [Q]Macklemore from Seattle, [Washington]. When you’re talking about Hip Hop, those are the people for the next five years.”

Nipsey Hussle credits West Coast Hip Hop’s success to artists unwilling to chase new trends. “I think if you stay down, you’re gonna come up on everything,” the Crenshaw rapper said. “I think everybody just stayed down, stayed doing what they was doing. They didn’t jump on trends. They stuck with what was more true to them.”

Nipsey Hussle’s Crenshaw mixtape is scheduled for an October 8 release.

Dom Kennedy’s Get Home Safely album is scheduled for an October 15 release.

Previous guests on DJ Skee’s “SKEE Live” include Kendrick Lamar2 ChainzPusha TToo Short and RiFF RaFF, among others. "Skee Live" airs Tuesdays at 10pm EST on AXS TV.

They raised the stats of the West in hip hop, but hip hop is still dominated by the south. There are a lot of active veteran artists in the south, but new talent is rising everywhere In generally though, all sides are growing. South has 2 Chainz and Future, North has Joey Bad@$$ and French. West gets TDE. etc.

Killah Priest is from NYC,Curren$y and Project Pat are from the south, and they make way better music than any of the rappers listed in the article. Mitchy Slick is from cali, and he said Curren$y is the only rapper who's music he listens to besides his own. Who the hell is dom kennedy anyway? Another rapper to fall asleep to?

I've never heard killer priest. I'm a fan of curren$y but TBH as of now the game is being owned by the west coast in topics and lyrics. You got a few others who aren't west coast spitting real stuff but not as big.

as far as getting recognized on the mainstream level, the west is about to be on top this isnt about whos lyrical...n no one in ny listens to killa priest aside from 100 40 year olds who still live like theyre in the early 90s and 500 white backpackers

No one listens to Killah Priest? You must be one of these 14 year old fag "swag" niggas that dress like they're ready to skate. Also, read the article dummy. Dom kennedy says west coast rap "is" on top. Not "about" to be. So in essence your retarded ass agrees with me.
