J. Cole Dedicates

J. Cole dedicates his "Crooked Smile" video to the life of Aiyana Stanley-Jones, a 7-year-old who was killed during a 2010 police raid.

Today (September 18), J. Cole released the video for "Crooked Smile," a single from his album Born Sinner. The video honors the life of Aiyana Stanley-Jones, a 7-year-old who was killed during a police raid in 2010.

In June 2013, a judge declared a mistrial in the case of Joseph Weekley, a Detroit, Michigan police officer who reportedly shot and killed Stanley-Jones, according to cbsnews.com. Weekley maintains that his weapon was fired accidentally. The jury on the case could not reach a verdict on the trial, according to cbsnews.com reports. Weekley faces a second trial in December, according to Fox News.

Weekley has said that he pulled the trigger of his weapon in a struggle with Stanley-Jones' grandmother, Mertilla Jones, according to cbsnews.com. However, Mertilla Jones has denied that she interfered with the gun. Another officer has testified that there was no struggle over the gun, as per cbsnews.com.

The raid was reportedly recorded for "The First 48," a docu-reality television series. Stanley-Jones' family members have said that the officers involved in the raid were concerned about their appearance for the television cameras more than they were about the actual raid, according to cbsnews.com reports.

J. Cole's video, which appears to tell the story of this case, ends with a note from J. Cole.

"FOR AIYANA STANLEY-JONES.

AND PLEASE RECONSIDER YOUR WAR ON DRUGS."

The video, available on HipHopDX, can also be seen below.

J Cole is definitely one of a kind. He really focuses on REAL world circumstances, not like most of these so called "rappers" who only talk about the same shit; Pussy, money, weed. Thats not rap, RAP is Rhyme and Poetry which mean there's real meaning and feelings behind the words. Listen to his other songs like "Lost ones", "Daddy's little girl", "Breakdown"...THATS rap.

BEST VIDEO EVER!! Cole delivered with this one. COLEWORLD BORNSINNER
  • slipeven
that raid had nothing to do with drugs. they had a warrant for the arrest of a man who killed a teenager because he gave him a dirty look. and instead of saying fuck the police we should be saying fuck the parent swho have children but still choose to live a life of crime and put their child's and family lives in danger.

The raid itself wasn't the focal point of the video. It's the story about a 7 year old girl who got shot. Her uncle and father made mistakes which caused her death, the officer did so as well. In the video, if you don't look at it literally, it's the same thing. J Cole dealing with drugs and the officer's mistake caused the girl's death. In the end, no one wins.

If you look closely, you will find the video is related directly to the song. Cole not the (picture perfect) person is involved with drugs. Though under that, he is still a human and cares very much for his family and his sister, much like the Cop does for his daughter. The Cop in verse one is spending time with his daughter, giving her something to value about herself. The moral is we're all different but not that different. We live different but feel pain the same. Separation is foolishness.

exactly. Idk what people expect Cole smiling the whole video and showing his teeth? The song has deeper meaning than that

Thank you. I have read all comments on several sites this morning and everyone has a different take on the message of the video and what I have concluded (the positive ones) is that they are all correct, but different. I see this video from the all the positive comments. The best thing about the video is that you can look at it from so many directions and still agree with the other commenters. I think because the video is truth. JCole does music and videos to promote non-surface thinking. I just love JCole's mind. JCole is the son of Tupac and Nas.

Game only does it for publicity. The truth is he has hurt more people promoting gangster rap and the blood lifestyle than hes ever helped by giving a few bucks away for instagram posts

Vid has nothing to do with the song. The video is symbolic. It would have been great for a different song...but wow. It doesn't sit with Crooked Smile at all imo
    • Taylor
Yes, it does. "Look at the nation, that's a crooked smile braces couldn't even straighten." Ending the video with "And please reconsider you war on drugs" is a reflection of this line, and actually the last verse as a whole. It was skillfully done.
