With a surplus of club bangers and other lively records, it may come as a surprise to many that Atlanta emcee 2 Chainz sometimes uses his music as a type of therapy. While appearing on an episode of “Fuse News” this week, the B.O.A.T.S. II: #MeTime rapper touched on the death of his father and being able to take his mind off the loss of his dad through music.

2 Chainz also commented on the dynamics of father/son relationships and the consequences a masculine-heavy relationship can have emotionally.

“Father/son relationships, it’s a lot of masculinity. You’re taught to be strong. You’re taught to fight back. You’re taught not to cry,” 2 Chainz explained. “It’s kind of like your first–I guess role model or something like that. Your father would be. And so for me, losing him I definitely lost somebody that I could trust, confide in, and communicate with about a lot of different things [when] talking to. Even that experience of losing him made me stronger. Music is therapeutic in a way that it keeps my mind off my father.”

On the newly-released B.O.A.T.S. II: #MeTime, 2 Chainz opens up about his relationship with his father, who passed away July of last year, on “Live And Learn (It Will).” On the song, which also features Dolla Boy and Pusha 2, 2 Chainz raps, “My pop told me men don’t cry/Then he turned around and died on me/So I didn’t know what else to do/But mothafuckin cry, homie.”

The Def Jam Records lyricist referred to “Live And Learn (It Will)” as the most personal song on B.O.A.T.S. II: #MeTime and one where he was able to express thoughts he wasn’t able to share with his father.

“’It Will Live And Learn,’ that’s the name of it. And it’s about my father,” said 2 Chainz when asked what the most personal song on his new album is. “He was my best friend. And he passed in front of me. And we just had a lot that we talked about. And a lot that we didn’t talk about. So, I kind of express that in the song.”
