Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Perform

Jennifer Hudson and Mary Lambert join Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to collectively hit Brooklyn's Barclays Center with a performance of "Same Love."

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performed at MTV's Video Music Awards today (August 25). Their performance of "Same Love" came on a momentous evening for the duo who walked into the award show tied for most nominations with six. One of the group's nominations came for Video of the Year ("Thrift Shop") and another was for Best Hip Hop Video ("Can't Hold Us")—an award they subsequently won.

During the set Mack and Ryan were joined by The Heist guest Mary Lambert, along with RCA Records star vocalist Jennifer Hudson.

Before hitting the stage, Macklemore spoke about his performance to MTV

"The performance is going to be...hopefully memorable," Macklemore said during rehearsals. "Hopefully we will be in the present moment, we will capture some magic on stage that will be transmitted to the televisions of the world."

In a recent CRWN interview, Macklemore spoke about what "Same Love" means to him.

"The fact that ["Same Love"] is played on mainstream radio in America means that it is creating a dialogue," Macklemore said. "People are hearing the lyrics to this song about marriage equality. Whether you agree with it or you don't agree with it, you are forced, until you turn that radio dial, to listen to it. Hopefully that leads to conversation. Hopefully that leads to dialogue. With that, I believe that change occurs. 'Thrift Shop' and 'Can't Hold Us' were the catalysts and then 'Same Love,' which is, to me, in my heart, the most important song that I've ever written, got embraced by the masses."

Do people realize how stupid they sound saying this song is a gimmick and he only made it for recognition and blah, blah, blah?? This song could've EASILY hurt his career! I mean, just look at all the gay bashing on this article?? SMH. People are idiots! The song was inspired by his uncle. Mack is brave enough to tackle REAL issues while your favorite rappers spew nonsense every song.

How could it have possibly hurt his career?? Gays have a lot of power in the media right now, you got gay civil rights goin on, and most of the country (USA) has increased its acceptance of the gay community than ever before. He most def capitalized off these fact by making that song. Now, if someone would have made a song like that 10 years ago, different story

not really. honestly mackelmore couldnt go wrong making this song. he appealed to gay people which ofcourse were going to love this song. and white people who dont know anything about rap love this type of shit, not to be racist but its true. social media made this man look like a god when really hes a corny ass rapper.

I JUST LIKE TO CALL OTHER PEOPLE FAGGOTS BECAUSE I'M INSECURE ABOUT MYSELF AND FEEL THE NEED TO CALL NAMES BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER ABOUT MYSELF. WOULD YOU PLEASE EXCUSE ME? I HAVE ANOTHER HUMONGOUSE ROD I'M GOING TO STICK UP MY ASS.

Honestly just couldn't stop LAUGHING during this performance. The faux emotions just weren't connecting -- it's just NOT an authentic story and is a #GIMMICK equivalent to Brands on Twitter that jump on the # Trending Topic bandwagon ... Honestly did Macklemore have some super fast EDM music in his headphones ?! That dude's movements are all over the place All I kept thinking was how fucking bad ass Yelawolf would have been up there on stage -- he'd rival JT in terms of emotions conveyed through Performance.

Check yo privilege bro. You just mad that other people are going to be viewed as equals, not lessers to you.... and you know when that happens you are going to be forgotten and push to the back of the crowd with the rest of the scumbags while people like them will be at the forefront. Sorry bro, just going to have to live with it.

The definition of a gimmick, his work isn't strong enough so he writes a song on an issue that's a hot topic right now. Not knocking his hustle though cause it is a hustle, he wants fame, money, recognition, he chose this song to make him relevant, that's a business move. But he's not hip-hop, his flow is garbage.

i dont think you know what you're talking about. you make it sound like it was all some calculated move to get fame money and recognition but im pretty sure his rise to success was more of a fluke and by chance.
