Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 8/18/2013

Kendrick Lamar crosses the million-mark with "good kid, m.A.A.d city," Jay Z and Robin Thicke hold steady and K. Michelle, Hoodie Allen, Stevie Stone and Aubrey O'Day debut into the Top 200.

This week saw several additions to the Top 200 album sales charts. K. Michelle's first effort, Rebellious Soul, had a Top 3 debut. As a result, the "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta" star earned a spot at #2 in the Top 200 with her Atlantic Records debut, following a late 2000s tenure with Jive.

Another strong addition to the charts came by way of Long Island, New York native Hoodie Allen. His latest release, Americoustic EP, landed at #28 in the Top 200. Hoodie has had some chart success in the past with his 2012 All American EP, which reached at #10 on Billboard's Top Albums. Strange Music's Stevie Stone also entered the charts this week, landing at #76 with 2 Birds 1 Stone. Additionally, onetime Danity Kane member and Bad Boy Records artist Aubrey O'Day broke through the Top 200 with Between Two Evils, her latest effort which reached #131.

The week also found stars holding strong or making gains. Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines held steady in the #4. While Jay Z slipped from #4 to #6, Magna Carta Holy Grail remained in the Top 10 after six weeks on the charts. Kendrick Lamar made gains with good kid, m.A.A.d. city, moving up from #52 to #36, as well as crossing a major benchmark, in the week that also saw him as a prominent figure in Hip Hop conversations after his much-discussed verse on Big Sean's "Control (HOF)" was leaked.

Kendrick Lamar's "Control" Verse Helps Him Control The Charts

Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse may have had had an impact on his sales. Since his verse on the Big Sean track leaked, the TDE rapper saw an increase in sales that catapulted his critically-acclaimed 2012 album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, back into the Top 40. The jump from #52 to #36 came on a week that had Lamar as the center of discussions within the genre. He was also the main focus of several rappers' response tracks after he said he was the "King of New York" and the "King of the Coast." Rapper responses came from a slew of artists, including Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Lupe Fiasco, Papoose and Cassidy. All of the chatter around Lamar and the verse appears to have allowed him to also control the charts as good kid, m.A.A.d. city broke the million mark to be certified platinum. This is Aftermath Entertainment's first platinum album since 2010's Eminem's Recovery (interestingly, their last release), and a first for Top Dawg Entertainment, K.Dot's longtime backer.

Stevie Stone Rocks The Charts With 2 Birds 1 Stone

Following Tech N9ne's Top 5 debut with Something Else, Strange Music has another Missouri emcee break into the charts with Stevie Stone. Stone's 2 Bird 1 Stone debuted at #76 this week with an album that Stone has described as personal. “I was taking the elements of my life,” he said in a press release about the album. “In the business aspect, I’m always on the road. Then there’s the personal, with my family, my kids. There’s all these things I have to accomplish and get done and those are the two biggest birds and there’s one me.” Strange Music's roster can be found throughout the album, with appearances from Rittz, Kutt Calhoun, Brotha Lynch Hung, Ces Cru and Prozak and Tech N9ne, on the single "The Baptism."

check this out though: "All you're doing is looking at numbers on paper" but before it was: "Yet he's six albums deep, on too many songs to count, and worth $25 mill." ^ lol isn't that looking at numbers on paper? "and worth $25 mill." ^ I mean, he didn't personally count it, how does he know this? By LOOKING on "paper". Do I need to remind all this is in response to a FACT, that the rapper Rick Ross doesn't not possess a US platinum plaque for any of his solo albums? Not man enough to admit the truth, you reaching for a lifeline when the cab already drove off, lol Quote-Man is in love with a lying, fat Black guy with an eyewear fetish. lmfao

"they are all commercial failures and liars! they aint balling like they claim in all the songs and videos selling 40k records first week" All you're doing is looking at numbers on paper. Most of the industry is claiming shit their sales don't back up. It's a touring game as well as a digital singles game.

Kendrick took a hundred shots from a hundred clowns and still won in the end. Kendrick 'Control' verse = One of the greatest moments in modern hiphop (if not the greatest).
    • Anonymous
no it wasn't ...since when do "great moments in Hip Hop" on last for a few days? lol nobody is even talking about that shit anymore.. all hype and this is coming from someone who actually likes Kendrick Lamar's music
    • Anonymous

    • ETK
when you got the whole rap game talking about ONE verse, even if just for a few days it's something when Kendrick's verse alone gets 2+ million views on Youtube, it's something to talk about "all hype" is what defines great moments in hip-hop... that's the point it WAS all hype

I'm probably wrong but didn't Macklemore sign a contract with Warner Bros a while ago? Not completely independent but a great success for a rapper who was selling much less than he is now.
    • Anonymous
I don't know if they did BUT this was an indy project. Am I not right?
    • Anonymous
