Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 8/4/2013

Both Tech N9ne and Robin Thicke hit career bests, with "Something Else" and "Blurred Lines," respectively.

Star Trak/Interscope Records singer Robin Thicke achieved his first #1 album in a decade-long career. After a decline in first-week sales and chart positioning on 2011's Love After War, the Los Angeles, California native bounced back in a big way with Blurred Lines. Thicke edged out Five Finger Death Punch by a margin of over 50,000 units.

Also entering the Top 5 was Tech N9ne with his 13th studio album, Something Else. This Strange Music effort entered at #4, matching 2011's All 6's & 7's chart performance. Something Else out-sold the 11th LP by nearly 2,000 units, making it a career benchmark for the present-day king of independent Hip Hop.

In Terms Of Sales, Tech N9ne Is Something Else

Tech N9ne's third studio LP in approximately two years marks a career best for the Kansas City, Missouri musical icon. Selling over 58,000 first-week units, the album chased Jay Z's rankings with Magna Carta Holy Grail. On Tech's 13th studio effort, the onetime 816 Boyz/The Regime standout worked with Game, Cee-Lo Green and Big K.R.I.T., among an extensive list of collaborators. The LP features single "So Dope," which features Tech's artist Wrekonize (of ¡Mayday!), in addition to Atlantic Records sensation Snow Tha Product and Twisted Insane.

Largely produced by Tech's go-to Seven, the album also includes musical contributions from Memphis, Tennessee producer Drumma Boy, and onetime Kurupt hit-maker Fred Wreck.

There Are No Blurred Lines About Robin Thicke's First #1 Album

Robin Thicke's sixth studio album (and fifth major label effort) Blurred Lines gave the longtime Hip Hop artist collaborator and  Star Trak Records artist his first #1. The LP features involvement from Thicke's longtime label backer Pharrell Williams, as well as other Interscope Records star producers will.i.am and Timbaland.

Both of the album's singles have featured Hip Hop acts, with the title track "Blurred Lines" featuring T.I. and its producer Pharrell, and "Give It 2 U" featuring another Interscope-backed Cali kid in Kendrick Lamar. The first boasted a N.S.F.W. video that went viral, with topless appearances by models Emily Ratajkowski, Jessi M'Bengue, and Elle Evans.

"Anything's possible" That first album usually gives you a good idea of what's in store for that artist. Some blow up even bigger like Jay or Eminem, but it must be hard for Drake to keep crafting these songs and he's 2x platinum. Kendrick has talent, but I don't see him with enough to build a great career when it's all said and done.

"but I don't see him with enough to build a great career when it's all said and done." Then you have shitty predictions.

"in a time where everyone was going plat" So what? Eminem was a new artist and nothing was a guarantee.

"arent kendrick and macklemore also successful for their time?" I've stated many times how I just don't like their music so whatever success they have to me doesn't mean that much, more so Macklemore. He's making these horrible songs that for some unknown reason a demographic of people are going ape shit over.

Now you're being a hater. You don't have to like them, but at least respect them. "He's making these horrible songs that for some unknown reason a demographic of people are going ape shit over." His songs are not horrible.

"defending two shit artists" I'm defending the fact for their time, they were successful. That's something your trans gender ass can't dispute even if it's killing you inside.
    • Anonymous
i dont get you man.... arent kendrick and macklemore also successful for their time? yet you wanna dispute that and say they wont be hear 5 years from now.... just like the two rappers you're now defending. you cant have it both ways

Being successful doesn't mean you're good. Justin Bieber's also successful and he sucks ass.

"at least he will always be able to say he went play in 2013 when niggas was barely going gold" So now his career trumps those others? Get the fuck outta here. He barely went platinum. Eminem's 1st album with the Dre co-sign went 3x platinum.

"You're full of hate and are just making up bullshit" His major label debut came out in 2012. We all know he'll have another one coming eventually, but to assume he's going to have this dynasty like career now. That's for fools and females to believe.

Anything's possible. You thinking of this is pure hate.

"You can't flop independently" Tell that to anyone whose ever been on Koch.

"And you're basing this on what, hate?" On the musical climate. His hype has died way down.
    • Anonymous
Wrong again. The hype hasn't died down.

"kendrick been rappin since 2003 thats already 10 years" I wasn't talking about his goofy indie flop, or his mixtapes. His major debut was in 2012. He won't be around five years from now.
    • Anonymous
Nobody believes you. You're full of hate and are just making up bullshit.

      You can't flop independently.

"hammer and vanilla ice sold 10 million albums too dawg. it doesnt make them good or classic" It doesn't make them bad either. Do you think you could have done what either one of those guys did, and did it well enough to get endorsements and a movie? Of course not.
    • Anonymous
      Yes. They're bad.

"call me back when ross sells a million (of one album) in 10 years" Kendrick won't even see 5 years in the game lol

"this is exactly why no one will ever take you seriously Quoteman!" Call me when Macklemore has been on hundreds of songs like Wayne has that get fan pages devoted to listing their favorite verses. Call me back when Macklemore or Kendrick sell a mill in a week, or sell 10 million albums. You're fussin and fightin for nothing. Your rap super heroes are here today gone tomorrow.
