Logic Affiliate Skizzy Mars Names His Favorite Rappers

Exclusive: Skizzy Mars praises Rakim, Raekwon and others. The Harlem rapper is on tour with labelmates Logic and Castro as part of The Welcome To Forever tour.

Logic's affiliate Skizzy Mars may only be 20 years old, but that doesn't mean the rising rapper can't enjoy artists who were releasing material before he was born. "I always appreciate Tupac and Biggie and the Raekwons and the Rakims," Skizzy Mars says during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. The rapper appears with Logic and C Dot Castro as part of The Welcome To Forever tour tonight (May 31) at the House Of Blues in West Hollywood, California.

"In eighth grade I was on [Kid] Cudi," Skizzy continues. "When I went to his concert I knew I wanted to be a rapper. Lupe [Fiasco] too and Kanye [West]…those guys really inspire me. They’ve been pushing boundaries for a while. Those guys have opened up the way for new rappers and new dudes now who maybe 10 years ago wouldn’t be accepted in the public eye. Drake is very vulnerable. My music is the same way just in terms of not caring if I show emotion."

Skizzy Mars' debut project, the recently released Phases, features the Harlem, New York rapper finding creative ways to express his wide range of emotions. With "Pay For You," for instance, he and collaborator G-Eazy specifically tried to be different. "We had this idea of flipping the typical rap song to a girl," says the man born Miles Mills. "You know, ‘Come with me. I’ll take you where you like all around the world.’ I wanted to be more original…flipping the idea and having a rich girl pay for you. We both had experiences dating rich girls like a lot of people have. The song reacted well. The fans liked it. The girls really liked it. G has a lot of girl fans, but Logic has fans that are hip hop purists. It’s different."

Skizzy Mars says that the video for the Phases track "Cheer Up" will be arriving soon.
